Move to NYC???

Motivated by some recent threads similar in topic, I thought I’d toss my situation out to WSO to gather some opinions. I am considering making a move to NYC to try to find a job. The catch, I’m Canadian, so ultimately I’ll need to get sponsored for a work Visa.

I’m finishing a masters in finance in two months and am also a CFA charter holder. For what it’s worth, I had decent grades in UG and through my masters (3.7). I have some decent EC experience too. All my professional work experience has been in ops though. Ideally I would like to get into ER, buy or sell-side. S&T would also be a consideration; not interested in IB.

The plan would be to move and give myself a few months to tie something down. Fortunately, my gf lives in NYC as does some of my immediate family, so accommodations and a support system aren’t a problem. Once there, I would spend my time networking and searching for openings.

I am visiting with my school next week to meet with some alumni. I plan to stay in contact with whoever I meet so that I can arrange coffee chats/informational interviews for future visits. I have done a couple informational interviews in the past when I’ve visited and through random meetings spoken with some recruiters. The overwhelming suggestion from everyone has always been to move and start looking once there. Everyone says it will make things much easier for me and a potential employer.

How likely is it that this plan would work out?

Sounds like you have a good attitude about it. Requiring a sponsorship will definitely make it more challenging but it seems like you've made yourself enough of a draw that a firm would be willing to go through the sponsorship process for you. A recruiter told me while in UG that it's almost impossible to convince the government that they couldn't find an equally similar candidate for a job straight out of undergrad, but if a candidate has more work experience and an MBA/Masters (and even a CFA on top of that in your case), it's easier. Best of luck!

I think you have a pretty good shot given you almost have CFA and are finishing up masters. Have a current friend who graduated early from undergrad and is living in the City (he's from Sweden) and has a few interviews. I think he'll get something even though he hasn't much experience to speak of, so I'm sure that given your credentials that you'll be able to find something.
