Network my way to New York
With 1.5 yrs Credit Analyst at large bank (BoA, Wells Fargo, etc.) and 1.5 yrs combined miscellaneous financial analyst role in non-financial services industry, would that be enough to make a move out of DC to NY in a credit role in Asset Management or a HF?
I don't feel like I would be taken seriously in NY, right? Wouldn't it best to stay where I am a little longer then go the MBA route then jump from there? (A few more resume boosters)
But after reading many posts here, it seems with some networking and the WSO Job Board I might be able to make the move and break into the New York market.
I'm actually trying extremely hard to make the opposite move! Not that NYC isn't great, but I think DMV as a whole is a much better location.
To answer your question, the way I see it you have a few options: 1. Work with a headhunter/recruiter 2. Come to as many credit/debt functions and dinners as possible in NYC and network the shit out of them 3. If you have a close friend or relative in NYC, put his/her address on your resume and again...network the shit out of everyone (alumni, random linkedin folks etc) 4. Get into a school that has strong recruiting ties in NYC and do your MBA in about 1.5 years.
I'm no expert, but the best season for laterals is Feb/March when everyone takes his bonus and dips out. Best of luck.
What makes you want to move to DMV? What type of work?
Also thanks for the tips 1-4, sounds great. I definitely intend on ramping up the networking on my end.
Sorry about the late response.
NYC is great - nightlife, things to do etc- there's an abundance. But to be honest, I only remained in NYC because getting a job and networking here is a lot easier and brings better results. I did undergrad in DC, and grad school in NY, and I can safely say I had a better experience in DC (not that NYC has been a bad experience, just not as great).
Right now I do muni finance/project finance, and tbh, really comfortable in that space. I may eventually try to switch to infra PE or an infra fund. Feel free to PM me with more questions.
Start talking to headhunters. MBA might be an option but a pricey one.
Any recommendations on headhunters?
