Networking with Fraternity Brothers who are not alumni

Hello WSO,

I am a second-year student at a non-target university, and have been working on networking this summer. However, the alumni pool for my university is very limited in IB, both geographically and firm-wise (we send to  a few firms, but that is about it.)

However, I am in DSP, a business fraternity. I am wondering if it is worth reaching out to fraternity alumni to expand the amount of firms I can try and "work towards." The best thread I found on this issue was a thread from a few years back (it won't let me post the link sadly.)

My question is two-fold:

1) Is it worth reaching out to these brothers / has anyone had any success reaching out to fraternity members from other universities?

2) Is there a particular way I should reach out, or just say in the email "I saw on LinkedIn that you were also a member of DSP..." or something like that?

If there are any other details I can provide to help, I will. Thank you!

I did the same thing with my social frat as well as my business frat. Success rate was much lower but worth it if your school network is thin -- would just say you wanted to reach out to a brother to learn about their experiences or something along those lines. Keep it simple and hope for the best

That’s the whole point of business frats — it gives you networking access to people who you would have otherwise not have any connections with in the first place.

For example, I got a FT First Round and a subsequent Super Day invite to a BB IB product team just on the merit of being a part of a major biz frat that the VP interviewer was a part of despite going to another college (in fact, one of my college’s “major” rivals in its conference). Really helped out in getting me moving along the recruiting pipeline.
