No Internship this summer - What can I do to prepare for next recruitment round?
Hi all,
I have just finished my first year at a non-target Russel Group UK University doing Economics and Finance. Despite applying, I did not get even a sniff at an internship this summer, failing at the first hurdle most times. Since most internships prefer undergraduates in their penultimate year (2nd year of study for me), I'm wondering what I can do over summer to help increase my chances next time around. I'll be working a full time warehouse job during the day, but will be able to listen to any podcasts/audiobooks during this time. I will have most evenings free to crack on with any courses or other recommendations. Any help is appreciated, thanks.
To maximize your summer and prepare for the next recruitment round, here’s a game plan based on the most helpful WSO content:
1. Build Technical Skills
2. Stay Informed
3. Network Strategically
4. Gain Relevant Experience
5. Prepare for Behavioral Interviews
6. Leverage Your Summer Job
7. Polish Your Resume
By combining these efforts, you’ll not only enhance your technical and behavioral skills but also position yourself as a more competitive candidate for the next recruitment cycle. Keep pushing forward—your hard work will pay off!

Working full time is good; Most people don’t put in the effort to do that during their summers.
Polish off what you already have on your CV. Since you don’t have as much materials, make sure that what you do have is in a nice and CONSISTENT format, has correct grammar and punctuation, etc.
Since you’re working in a warehouse, you could listen to podcasts that you find interesting and that are relevant in some degree. Be informed and be able use industry jargon in your interview by listening to podcasts on financial topics.
Get really familiar with behavioural and technical questions + interview practice (talking to anyone/anything), so that when the interview process comes around you don’t waste interviews.
Will do this, thank you. Any podcast recs?
