No return - Am I cooked?

Just finished my summer internship at a MF PE and didn’t get a return, going into my final year of university

Should I now begin applying to Off cycles , summer internships or graduate roles? And will I be competitive for IB roles?

I’m shitting it

1) The fundraising for the latest fund has been shit and the team is generally just not hiring, feedback was generally positive across the board

2) No IB previous experience outside of a BB spring week which doesn’t count

1. Were there other interns? If so, did they return? Could people in the firm possibly refer you to some of the IBs that they worked at?
2. Fair. Will be a bit tough to spin that story, but doable.

I would seriously try to leverage the connections you've made during your internship to see if they'll refer you to the banks they came from.

Based on previous WSO threads, here's what you need to know:

  1. Applying to Off-Cycles:

    • Off-cycle internships are more accommodating for students who have already graduated or are in their final year. They tend to convert straight into full-time roles if you perform well and there is a business need.
    • Off-cycle internships can be slightly more difficult as they often skew towards candidates with relevant experience and have fewer spots available.
  2. Applying to Summer Internships:

    • You can still apply for summer internships, especially if you plan on doing further studies. This can help you gain more experience and potentially secure a full-time role afterward.
    • Summer internships typically run from mid-June to late August and are a good option if you lack significant work experience.
  3. Applying to Graduate Roles:

    • If you have a decent CV and don't plan on further studies, applying directly to graduate roles is a viable option. Networking is crucial for securing these roles, especially in London where full-time roles often come from connections.
  4. Competitiveness for IB Roles:

    • Ensure your technical skills are well-prepared, as off-cycle interviews can be more challenging.
    • Networking is key. Many full-time roles come from people you've networked with, so make sure to leverage any connections you have.
  5. General Advice:

    • Off-cycle internships allow you to maximize your preparedness, network extensively, and identify the opportunities you truly want.
    • Be proactive in your applications and networking efforts to increase your chances of securing a role.

In summary, start applying to off-cycle internships, summer internships, and graduate roles. Focus on networking and preparing your technical skills to enhance your competitiveness for IB roles.

Knew a guy who this happened to, he ended up in a mid-tier group at a top BB after recruiting FT. This was in the USA, though
