Offer rescinded less than 1 week into internship, they said "it isn't working out" and no longer need me. What do I do now?
Today was my last day. It was with a small but dominant real estate agency.
Like a lot of you here, I'm a hardworking, driven junior finance major from a Big Ten university with a 3.9 GPA and plenty of ECs. I was looking to really throw myself into this internship, learn the industry, produce quality work, and succeed.
However, Day 1 they shuttled me into the back of the back office without any guidance. They made me find my own desk space. Most significantly, they neither trained me nor gave me anything to do. They didn't even give my coworkers a mere heads up that I was arriving; I introduced myself to them and they said "What? We have an intern?" Subsequently, my time there consisted largely of me walking around, introducing myself, and asking what I could do, which was almost always answered with a "nothing, really".
Come today, I am pulled aside and told that the firm is in a transitional state--that, basically, accepting me as an intern was ill-conceived and myopic and that they simply do not have the resources to train me. From what I've gathered, quite a few more-experienced employees resigned in between the time of my acceptance and starting the job. This created a sudden void in the office which I got lost in.
What do I do now? Should I reach out to local firms explaining the situation causing my sudden availability and showing my willingness to learn and work?
I'm in Pennsylvania, for what it's worth, and am absolutely willing to relocate if it's logistically possible.
Thanks for the response. What "certain words" would you recommend? Start asking very politely, and if that goes nowhere, be frank about how I need something from them since I pretty much got screwed over?
You should definitely ask them for help in finding another summer internship, especially if it was paid. If you are not able to find an internship by this time, try offering to work unpaid. Many firms would be open to doing remote internships with you.
This seems to be the consensus. I will definitely email them asking for help. As much as I loathe the concept of unpaid internships, I'll start shopping around for them.

It would be a similar approach to cold emailing about actual internships. Even if you are originally doing grunt work, if you show initiative and are good at what you do, then you will eventually do important stuff. Just make sure that you don't end up with a firm like Blackmore Partners.
Not joking, but you might smell. You shower in the morning right?
I shower every morning, wear deodorant, and usually Polo Red cologne on top of that. If my smell is the issue, I don't think that's further within my control.
