Physically attractive women get internships more easily?
Just wanted to know what you guys think about physical attractiveness when big corps hire interns - do you really believe that if you're very attractive, you have a greater chance of being hired even if you suck at interviews, or is the ability to relate and communicate well with others more important especially when interviewing for internships?
I've interviewed for over 10 internship positions, but got rejected from all of them... Maybe if I were prettier I would have gotten accepted for at least one position :(
Its the same way with male interns.
More attractive males have a better chance than their less attractive competition. However that may have more to do with more attractive people tend to have more confidence and better interpersonal communication skills and higher EQ than "ugly" or "unattractive" applicants.
Physical appearance definitely has an impact for both men and women. Nothing intentional, but physical appearance plays a role on first impressions, and despite your potential best effort to not consider that as a factor in hiring, it will still influence you. Even if you don't care about looks, your clients potentially will, and you need to consider that as well.
Given you're asking this question at all, I expect being ugly isn't the only reason you were rejected.
Yea, i admit i have poor interpersonal skills, too
And there is your answer.
You can't fix "ugly" but you can fix poor interpersonal skills. Work on that instead of crying "woe is me"...if you're getting interviews, it means you're qualified on paper. Give people fewer reasons to reject you after meeting you in person.
boom, shots fired!
Looking at the face book for our 2014 crop of interns, I suspect looks play a role more for women than for men.
Easily.
I would say its a huge advantage, especially for women. Finance has an extremely high guy-to-girl ratio, and those women that are in finance are typically not attractive. Any time theres a female that is even decent looking that walks into the office, she immediately gets tons of attention from everybody, and most of the lower-level guys want to try to get her the offer in order to hope to have a chance with her.
Thing is, I am interviewing for accounting intermships, which is less face to face, such as sales or marketing...
Sound like you're a nerd who doesn't even attempt to maintain your appearance. Nobody wants to be around a slob. Most women in finance aren't hot, so it's doubtful it is your underlying physical appearance that you were born with. But, if you fon't take care of yourself, that will definitely impact your success.
Also, being socially awkward is obviously a huge negative, probably bigger than appearance in over 99% of the instances. I don't know how to tell you to improve, other than just try socializing more often and it should become easier with practice (like anything else).
Attractiveness is competitiveness.
First of all, I really believe attractiveness is important in almost any industry nowadays. All of a sudden, degrees and experience isn't the only thing employers look for in interviews.
That being said, I agree with UTDFinanceGuy, It is probably more about self confidence. Don't doubt yourself, or think any less of yourself. If you don't let the mindset block your way, you confidence will show more.
Have confidence in yourself! The guys here have a point but you know that looks aren't everything. If you try hard, you will definitely make it. Chin up!
It's called the Halo Effect, read up. Better looking people are perceived as smarter. That's just how the human brain operates.
Love how the women were so spiteful of their own sex.
Catfights are why women like cats
Low IQ is correlated with ugliness, but once your reach the normal IQ of a first-world county, the correlation between intelligence and attractiveness becomes a crap shoot.
I don't know about how some correlation shiznit but learn to read brah...the operative word here is perceived...obviously appearance has nothing to do with actual intelligence. Albert Einstein wasn't exactly a hunk.
Up your confidence in interviews and nail your technicals - you need to be excited in interviews. Make the interviewer realize that you want the job and you are going to perform well. Try to find something in common to talk about. A pretty girl is going to get a pass on some things, but I know of several very attractive girls who bombed internships/first year jobs and people (recruiters, superiors, etc.) remember those things. If you look at people in the financial services industry, many are far from "beautiful people" as many people tend to let themselves go so you shouldn't really be at a total disadvantage if you aren't a 10.
Agreed, if you are a 8 or 9 you should be ok.
Internship in what exactly, investor relations? Of course attractiveness plays a role in hiring, insomuch as it relates to the image you project externally. That's true of any industry that requires you to work actively/cooperatively with others, especially those with a heavy client-focus. However, no one is going to hire you as a quant research intern at a major investment firm just because you look pretty. That's an extreme example, but the cost of paying to have someone incompetent on the team outweighs the benefits of having a pretty face around, especially as the technical difficulty of a job increases. The people to watch out for? The attractive AND intelligent ones.
Think about it this way. An investment banking team wants to have analysts/interns around who know their stuff - those who can put in the work to earn the paycheck and that bullet on their resume. If they really wanted/needed a pretty face around, they could hire an escort and/or model (who would not be taking away the spot of a competent person on the team) at a much cheaper rate.
if you're unattractive but well-groomed and confident/fun you won't have any issues. The issue is, a lot of unattractive people internalize their looks and it negatively effects their personality and confidence. That fat guy everyone finds hilarious in your fantasy football league has no trouble getting jobs.
agreed. it's all about grooming & confidence. plus, if you gain confidence and keep yourself put together better, you'll inevitably attract more men. the worst thing an unattractive person can do is smell bad (either via BO or too much perfume), dress poorly, be out of shape, have poor manners, etc., it does not bode well for you. I saw somebody this past weekend at the US Open whose face was unfortunate looking, but she was so well mannered I thought she was a looker. thinking back on that, she wasn't, she just carried herself well.
