Scheduling Informational Interviews
How far out in advance can I ask to set up a one-on-one informational meeting? I am planning a trip out to NYC in the begging of November and optimally I would like to start arranging these meetings. I'm afraid I might give a bad impression asking to schedule a meeting three weeks out in advance. When I contact these individuals I give them my quick introduction ( 3 sentences) and simply ask "If possible, I would like to have a discussion around your professional background and of XYZ company". I try to leave it as open as I can, because some individuals say they only have time to speak to me over the phone and other are willing to meet with me. I don't want to get stuck doing a phone interview between now and the time I leave, and then write to this person 2 days before I go letting them know I will be in the NYC area and would like to have another meeting (but this time face-to-face).
In my experience it's always best to reach out via email first, set up a brief informational via phone, then on the phone as you're concluding the call mention you'll be in town in a few weeks and was wondering if it would be possible to meet in person to learn more. I've done this many times as I've flown myself out to NY 3 times and to SF once.
