Silicon Valley hustle culture

I am curious about the general culture of the SV/Bay Area tech sphere. As a CS/Math & Econ minor student looking into different career paths (where many options are located in SF area), I cannot say that I’m too fond of what I hear. Does the culture feel unbearably hustle-y? Can you actually afford anything, even on an IB/VC/PE etc. salary? I like to have a decent standard of living, and the thought of a roommate situation being $2k+ per month is incredibly unappealing. Is everyone a Musk/Jobs/Bezos/etc worshipper always looking to somehow hack their biological performance? Or write a daily Medium article? pls advise

Yes, you can afford stuff. On the cultural front, you have to do a cost benefit analysis as with anything else. I’ll word vomit below, hopefully some of it helps inform your thinking.

Housing: - search Craigslist. You can find rooms in Marina/North Beach/Russian Hill/Mission (I’m assuming ur young and would follow the youths that flock to these hoods in droves) for $1600 as many people rent out their dining room as a bedroom. Not growing on trees, but yes they exist and are accessible to people without a network on the ground. You just have to set alerts for CL and put your CS skills to use with a script or 2 if you like.

Culture: - Nightlife blows relative to any other major city (NYC/LAChicago/Austin) because everything except Boom Boom Room closes at 1 am. I don’t even think you need to have NY/LDN clubs to have nightlife, but seriously SF is so lacking in this department. brutal. Also, people don’t go out on weeknights except drinks in FiDi for finance people or dinner with beers after work near SoMa or in your hood after you get off the 3:30p MV—>your hood shuttle. - Activities: if you aren’t passionate about tech and/or aren’t planning to take advantage of incredible outdoor opportunities in and around Bay Area, do not bother going there. From hiking, to skiing, to the obnoxious VC cycling cabals hogging valuable traffic lanes every morning and all day sat/sun, to surfing, to the plethora of road trip opportunities, it is OBSCENE how many incredible things there are to do. Also, Oakland is dope. Move to Oakland for a real fucking city with culture and food.
- Quality of Life: Even if you move to Bay and hate it and have no friends, you could do shit by yourself every weekend for 2 years and still walk/fly away with unbelievable life experiences you will never regret. And you will make friends who are similarly sick of the tech bros and podcasters (even tho you probably resemble them lol) and you will do things with them. - Making Friends: Trivia (weeknights obvi) is a good way to make friends. Also rock climbing and other activities. like fucking do CrossFit even if you’re not that type if you really need friends.

People: - Yes, no shortage of biohackers and tech bros. Ultimately, neighborhood you live in will heavily influence the flavor of tech acolyte that populates it. Place like Potrero Hill or Cole Valley is a tad more normal mix of humans than Cow Hollow/Marina which is basically college/Greek life 2.0 and young couples who used to be in that scene, along with smattering of families who have owned homes in the submersion (sic) zone for decades—all of whom will fall into ocean during next earthquake but that’s another story.

I’m on the app and can’t see ur original question but hope some of this helped.

This is super helpful. If I was able to give a SB, I would. I love outdoor activities, but kinda straddle the white sorority girl-Math/CS major identity but see myself more in a nightlife, party heavy scene for a few years (at least) out of college.

The housing situation sounds worse than NYC, no? 1600 for a dining room?! Yikes...

Can someone do a writeup like this for NYC banker culture? Finance vs. tech bros pls
