Soph at semi-target with a few offers, trying to figure out what to take
I'm currently a sophomore recruiting from a semi-target school. I double in Finance and Computer Science and have a 4.0 and good extracurriculars. I've had a few ibd interviews, but haven't been able to land anything.
However, I have landed a few offers outside of IBD:
- Offer at startup VC as an analyst (smaller firm, would get lots of hands on finance experience, one GP was former CFO of a BB)
- Offer for Financial Analyst in Institutional Securities Group at a BB in NYC (think MS, GS, would get to do modeling and network in NYC, as well as good pay)
- Offer as IT Project Manager intern for Boeing in Seattle (obviously not Finance related, haha)
Which offer would be best to take and would give me the best experiences? I also have one more IBD interview coming up, which I will prep very hard for. Getting IBD as a sophomore is just really tough now.
Any advice would really be appreciated.
Also, just for reference, the size of the VC initial fund is $50 million and they specialize in IT investments. I'm planning to work for them part-time during the semester.
Depends what your goal is... if you want to do banking next summer, then I would go with the GS/MS offer - have the name on the resume will make you stand out, especially since it looks like a front office role
Thanks for the advice NYC, I'm thinking of accepting it. It pays the same as an IBD internship at these firms, but at the same time, its in the Finance division. Do you think that'll hurt me next year at all?

Yes. Barring major connections, having anything Back Office on your resume = instant ding. Banks would much rather someone who spent their time cold calling (PWM) or "ticking and tying" (big 4 audit) in FO than someone with legitimate and relevant work experience in BO.
