Sophomore Summer Internship -- how feasible?
Greetings,
I am wondering how common sophomore summer internships are for positions in wealth/Asset Management/banking. If you have gotten one, how did you go about getting it? Through your university, or a connection outside of school?
How and when do I start searching for one for this upcoming 2017 summer? How should I go about contacting boutique firms? Top 5 Undergraduate business school according to Bloomberg (I know, who cares about rankings) with a 3.7 GPA. The school is not known to be as well rounded though (I hope you have guessed the school.)
Please -- any advice is appreciated.
Did you something this summer? Do you have any family connections? If not, you're probably gonna have to cold email your way into something.
I have a connection at a (very) respectable bank that I am working on. I am supposed to send my resume to an associate at the office in my home city soon. We will see how that works out, but I am not counting on it necessarily (hence why I posted this.)
Also working on how I should craft the email when I send this resume to them. "Hey, ____ mentioned I should send my resume for a potential internship position this upcoming summer...????"
As for the cold-emailing, any tips?

Your cold email needs serious work. Start with mentioning who you are. Then what your connection to the associate is (referral). End with your interest in the firm and schedule an informational call. Attach your resume.
Pro tip: The only real ranking that matters is US News. And even at that, I would catagotize your school in either target, semi target or non target and start the networking process from there.
You're very early. Target a city and get a list of the financial firms there. Don't just rely on your hometown, especially if it's not a major city. Send emails to top people at the firms you're interested in, explain your background and why you're interested in the firm, ask about possible opportunities, attach your resume.
Ask around in your parents' friend group. Relatives of friends can often hook you up. Have realistic expectations, don't apply to BBs or big shot hedge funds or PE firms, unless you have an in you have no shot as a sophomore. Shoot low, hit up a lot of people. If you email like 70-80 firms i'm sure you'll find a job somewhere.
I'm not sure they are common, but they aren't too difficult to get. Wealth management is more common than Asset Management, but either can be secured through a formalized program or through knowing someone.
Any ideas on where to start searching some wealth management positions? I know it's a bit early, but I feel like that'll better as a sophomore trying to get one.
Also, what do you mean by a formalized program?

So formalized programs are those in which you apply through a company website (e.g. going to JP's website and submitting an application for "Private or Global Wealth Management"). By contrast, an internship isn't formal if you contact your regional wealth management office and get a position. These can be just as good if you find the right people. Likewise, getting an internship at your local hedge fund isn't formal if its isn't part of a bigger internship program (of course, it's still difficult and phenomenal to have)
