Stay at current internship or take a chance?
Hey, first time poster here but I need some help regarding summer internships. I am currently working at a start up real estate PE shop, but don't really feel as though I am learning much. I am pretty much just databasing property owners and contacting them.
It's my junior summer and recruiting was unsuccessful for me as my gpa wasn't too hot at the time. It is definitely going to be up after this semester, and there are still some internship posts that I could apply to. Most of them are boutique IB or BB AM positions.
I was asked whether I wanted to continue over the summer, but I'm not sure if I should just continue or say no and take a risk at sending in more applications.
what risk? just keep applying/interviewing and stay at you current shop. If you land something better, you leave. Say you want to continue over the summer.
Wouldn't that burn bridges to just up and leave because you get something better? I hear everyone saying WS is a small place. Even more so since my current manager is an alumni of my school.
Telling your current employer you will stay this summer and then reneging could kill them as a reference for full time, depending on how they react. My advice would be to accept the additional summer with your current employer and apply to other internships. If a better offer comes along you have to weigh it against a possible bad reference from your current employer with having a better internship on your resume. Securing a BB or IB internship this late is a long shot so don't burn any bridges until you have to. If nothing comes of it you will at least have your current internship to fall back on.
its a start-up real estate PE. i doubt they will even care that you accept another offer. are you getting piad? dude keep hustling.
Now would be a good transition point to try and gain more responsibilities at your current firm. They just asked you if you'd like to come back for the summer - why don't you talk with them and see if you can get some more 'meaningful' experience? In the meantime, continue on the job lookout.
Definitely this. I would go against threatening to quit, but talk about how much more you have learned in school and how are ready to take on more responsibility. If they like you they should be willing oblige you. Then you can move to IBD or whatever for FT.
