striked myself out of SA 2026, now what?

I’m a sophomore at a target school

my freshman year gpa was 2.8

this semester I was only able to achieve a ~3.67

I chickened out of doing any real networking this semester because I was embarrassed of sending my resume with a low gpa and am worse off for it

what can I possibly do going from here?

Dude your a sophomore at a target, just focus on recruiting for your junior summer. Am at a BB right now, and process hasn't even kicked off yet heck apps aren't even out yet. You still have time, just grind networking post New Years.

Hey can I dm you? Not OP but curious how timelines are on your end/how networking is going on your end?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you can do to recover and position yourself for future opportunities:

  1. Focus on GPA Improvement: Continue building on your upward trend. A 3.67 this semester is a great start. Aim for a 4.0 in the upcoming semesters to boost your cumulative GPA. Highlight this upward trend on your resume.

  2. Network Aggressively: Networking is critical, especially with a low GPA. Start reaching out to alumni, professionals, and peers in the industry. Don't let your GPA hold you back—many professionals value persistence and a good story. Be honest about your GPA but focus on your growth and determination.

  3. Gain Relevant Experience: Secure internships, even if they are unpaid or at smaller firms. Boutique banks, local firms, or even roles in corporate finance can help build your resume. These experiences will demonstrate your commitment to the field.

  4. Leverage Your Target School: Being at a target school is a significant advantage. Use your school's alumni network and career services to find opportunities and connections.

  5. Polish Your Resume: Highlight your strengths, such as your recent GPA improvement, any leadership roles, extracurricular activities, or relevant coursework. If your major GPA is stronger, consider emphasizing that.

  6. Prepare for FT Recruiting: If you miss out on SA 2026, focus on full-time recruiting. Use the time to build your skills, network, and gain experience. Many people land great roles through full-time recruiting after missing SA opportunities.

  7. Consider Alternative Paths: If IB SA roles seem out of reach, explore other areas like corporate finance, consulting, or asset management. These can serve as stepping stones to your ultimate goal.

  8. Develop Your Story: Be ready to explain your GPA and how you've grown from the experience. A compelling narrative can help offset a low GPA during interviews.

Remember, persistence and strategic action can help you overcome this setback. Many professionals have successfully navigated similar situations. Keep pushing forward!
