Struck out on IB -- how to position myself for consulting?

I go to a semi-target for IB but more of a target for consulting. I've been leaning heavily into IB recruiting, but haven't been able to get past superdays, so I'm thinking that consulting recruitment is probably the best option now. MBB is starting to hold on-campus info sessions, but my resume is almost entirely finance-focused: an asset management internship this (sophomore) summer + search fund and LMM PE internships in the past. I'm also only in finance clubs on campus (other than my business fraternity, which is pretty good), and the consulting clubs are done recruiting for this semester. How do I position myself (i.e. make my story for "why consulting," tailor my resume, etc.) for consulting recruiting?

To position yourself effectively for consulting recruiting after focusing on IB, here’s what you need to do based on the most helpful WSO content:

1. Craft a Strong "Why Consulting" Story

  • Highlight transferable skills from your finance experience, such as analytical thinking, problem-solving, and teamwork. For example, emphasize how you analyzed complex financial data or worked on strategic decisions during your internships.
  • Frame your pivot to consulting as a natural progression. For instance, you could say that while you enjoyed the financial aspects of your internships, you realized you’re more drawn to solving broader business problems and working across industries.
  • Mention your interest in the variety of challenges consulting offers and your desire to make a tangible impact on clients’ businesses.

2. Tailor Your Resume

  • Focus on achievements that demonstrate skills consulting firms value: leadership, problem-solving, and impact. For example:
    • Instead of just listing financial modeling, highlight how your analysis influenced key decisions or drove results.
    • Quantify your impact wherever possible (e.g., “Identified cost-saving opportunities leading to a 10% reduction in expenses”).
  • Include extracurriculars like your business fraternity to showcase leadership and collaboration.
  • If your GPA is strong (e.g., above 3.7), include it prominently, as academic performance is a key factor for consulting resumes.

3. Network Strategically

  • Attend MBB info sessions and make a strong impression by asking thoughtful questions about the firm’s work and culture.
  • Leverage LinkedIn to connect with alumni or professionals at consulting firms. Cold email consultants with personalized messages, referencing shared experiences (e.g., your school or internships).
  • Use your business fraternity network to find connections in consulting and request informational interviews.

4. Prepare for Case Interviews

  • Start practicing case interviews immediately. Aim for at least 20 live cases with peers or mentors and 100+ solo cases to build confidence.
  • Focus on mastering the structure of case interviews, breaking down problems logically, and communicating clearly.
  • Use resources like case books or online platforms to refine your skills.

5. Differentiate Yourself

  • Be well-read on industries and business models. Consulting firms value candidates who are interesting and have unique perspectives.
  • Develop a strong understanding of a couple of industries (e.g., energy, banking) to stand out in conversations and interviews.

6. Leverage Your Semi-Target Advantage

  • Since your school is more of a target for consulting, capitalize on this by engaging with on-campus recruiting events and building relationships with firm representatives.
  • Be proactive in seeking feedback on your resume and story from consultants or career services at your school.

By focusing on these steps, you can effectively pivot from IB to consulting and position yourself as a strong candidate for MBB and other top firms.
