Trying to lock up an internship

This is my first post on WSO, so hang with me here. I am a rising junior majoring in economics with an above average gpa. This summer I had a part-time internship with a small financial advising firm and realized that I have a passion for finance/investments (not exactly sure what area yet). I guess what I am looking for here is any advice that would be beneficial for the internship process, i.e. interview tips, questions, best way to network, what specifically a recruiter will look for on a resume/cover letter, etc. Thanks for the help guys.

The most important thing is to decide what exactly you want to do and try to align your ECs and activities toward attaining that goal.

Do you want to do IB? Buy-side research? S&T? Figure out what interests you and what a job within that area would entail. Don't tell people you want to do S&T because you operate a small personal brokerage account and want to trade for a living -- it won't work. You have to be passionate about what you want to do, and that needs to be conveyed in your story during interviews, your resume, cover letters, and work progression.

I graduated with a degree in Econ, and the last two years of school I was torn between trying to break into AM and going to Law School. I combined both interests and fell into an internship at a regulator, followed by a FT buy-side compliance gig. I'm happy. For the most part the work is interesting, and I'm out of the office every day by 4:30pm.

Search this website and some of the former posts. I would take at least this next month to learn as much as you can about what this entire industry is, what jobs are out there and what recruiting is like.

All your answers can be found on this website and if they aren't than just ask. Here is a good link to start learning:

For you I would say look into Asset Management, wealth management, or sales & trading and if you find what you want to do, then you can refine your search on how to get it. Good Luck.
