UK SA to US Master's

If I've told a firm I'm going to do a master's and they offer me a summer in the UK, but I accept a master's in the US, would they rescind my summer offer? Is there any chance I could do the summer in the UK and then join next summer in the US office for a FT role in the US or will they just force me to accept a master's program in the UK? Would I have to renege? How does this work

Navigating the transition from a UK Summer Analyst (SA) position to pursuing a Master's degree in the US, and then aiming for a Full-Time (FT) role in the US, involves several considerations based on the WSO discussions and insights:

  1. Communication is Key: Initially, it's crucial to have open and honest communication with the firm about your plans. Firms appreciate transparency, especially when it comes to significant commitments like education and relocation.

  2. Policy on International Transfers: Many global firms have policies in place for transferring between offices, but this typically applies to full-time employees rather than summer analysts. You would need to inquire specifically about the firm's policy on this matter.

  3. Summer Offer Rescindment: If you've accepted a summer offer in the UK and later decide to pursue a Master's in the US, the firm might not necessarily rescind your offer based on this decision alone. However, it's essential to communicate your intentions as early as possible to assess their flexibility or willingness to accommodate your plans.

  4. Pursuing a Master's in the UK vs. the US: If your primary goal is to work in the US, attending a Master's program there could provide valuable networking opportunities and align more closely with US recruitment cycles. However, if the firm strongly prefers you to stay in the UK for your Master's, it's a discussion point rather than a mandate. You have the autonomy to choose your educational path.

  5. Reneging on the Summer Offer: Reneging should always be a last resort due to the potential long-term impact on your professional reputation. Before considering reneging, exhaust all options for open dialogue with the firm about your situation. If you find that your goals and the firm's expectations are irreconcilably different, make your decision with careful consideration of the consequences.

  6. Securing a FT Role in the US: Transitioning from a summer role in the UK to a full-time position in the US is not guaranteed and would likely require you to go through the US recruitment process. Success in your summer role, networking within the firm, and expressing your interest in the US office early on can improve your chances.

In summary, your ability to navigate this situation successfully hinges on clear communication, understanding the firm's policies, and aligning your educational and career goals with the opportunities available within the firm. Always consider the long-term implications of your decisions, especially when contemplating reneging on an offer.
