What sets apart candidates who get PJT/EVR/HL RX offers?

Sophomore at a semi target here. I am starting to prepare for IB recruiting specifically for restructuring and am wondering what sets apart the kids who get offers from the top restructuring boutiques. Clearly the technicals are hard but there are only so many ways to distinguish yourself through technicals and I am curious what to study to position myself well beyond that as these positions are so competitive.

Early prep and networking, knowledge/awareness of the space, and being charismatic and well-spoken so the group likes you. And luck. As said above, technicals are a check the box type of thing, you need to know them but everyone in your superday will likely know them as well.

Also look through school lists on LinkedIn. Certain groups are more open to a wider range of schools. Someone posted the last 10 years of PJT RSSG schools and 90-95% of the group was pulled from top targets. So probably not a good idea to put a ton of your eggs in that basket at a semi-target.

Politics. I went thru recruiting at all 3 and made it far. Sometimes it really comes down to politics and you can’t control that. I remember interviewing for bx credit and I got cut after the superday and the principal/MD called me saying sometimes things just don’t go in your favor for the most minute thing ever.

study the technicals, network, and hope for the best. if  you’re not at a target there’s a lot that’s out of your control.
