What to do as a freshman?

Hey all,

I am about a month into being a freshman at a non-target. Thus far, I've joined the student managed investment fund at my school (~1.4 million in AUM) and I'm currently working on macro research for one of the sectors of the fund. Additionally, I've joined the schools Investment Banking club and Alternative asset club, but haven't done anything for those clubs at this point. In terms of my classes, can't take major focused courses yet, but currently have all A's in my GenEd's.

So my question, what the hell should I be doing? I've been trying to network with upperclassmen through clubs. I know freshman internships are nearly unheard of, but does it make sense for me to start trying to network with individuals in industry now?

Any and all advice is appreciated.

Continue to be curious and stay open minded. Career goals may change, please reconsider when that happens.

I'm in my 30s and deeply regret not pivoting majors / transferring schools when I was considering it after my freshman year.

Maybe IB is for you, maybe it's not. Don't limit yourself and try to pick up pro-bono internships if you have to. A paid internship is nice but not always easy to get at 18-19 (especially in the current market).

get an internship for this summer, itll prolly be unpaid but thats fine. Honestly the super sweaty move is to get a part time internship in spring, and a full time internship for summer. best way for spring is just to email small boutique size companies in your area, summer youll apply online and u can email places too

I would honestly start networking now. Worse comes to worse people will tell you to reach back out closer to summer time but I’ve had firms (LMM pe and smaller hedge funds) finish their recruitment by Nov/dec. You could also try to find a part time search fund internship during the school year for some start experience.
