I'm a big fan of Uber and Stripe. I was a bit surprised on how well Uber worked and how it actually came out to be cheaper than taking a cab. Based on what I understand about the business model, most of the drivers have their own cars? This indicating that its not as capital intensive as a regular taxi company that owns/leases its own fleet of cars.

Stripe is tackling a huge problem in the web/mobile development world, which is simply accepting credit card payments. Due to the high level of security involved in credit card transactions, it is often very time consuming to build payments into your application and a slight mistake could cause a serious security hole. By "outsourcing" this process to stripe, you increase your level of security as well as accelerate your app development.

No, its more like a back-end credit card processor. Basically from a developers perspective, they would just receive the credit card inputs (number, cvv etc) and send it to Stripe, which encrypts the data and processes the transaction for the developer. It simplifies a historically time consuming and security loophole prone process. Developers would historically have to deal processors themselves or use paypal's crappy systems. On the other hand, paypal bought out a company called Braintree that does the same thing, but supposedly Stripe is more developer friendly.

To me, if you know the name of the company, it's not a start-up
