Will my offer get rescinded for getting cancer
Trying to keep it vague for obvious reasons. I signed an offer a few months ago. During my notice period at old employer I got diagnosed with cancer by total surprise. I'm a mid level PE professional going to a 2nd or 3rd tier city but a desirable one.
There's a chance surgery is all I need and I can just be normal again. But if I need chemo I figure there's no hiding that. Maybe 75% chance I need chemo. Not sure what to do. I guess there's also a chance I die.
The states involved are very deep blue.
Based on the most helpful WSO content, your situation is deeply personal and challenging, but there are a few key considerations to keep in mind:
Legal Protections: In the U.S., cancer is considered a disability under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). This means that employers are legally required to provide reasonable accommodations for employees with disabilities, including medical treatments like chemotherapy. Rescinding an offer solely based on your diagnosis could be considered discriminatory and unlawful, especially in "deep blue" states where labor protections are often stronger.
Transparency and Timing: If you anticipate needing accommodations (e.g., time off for treatment), it might be worth discussing this with your new employer after starting the role. Many professionals in similar situations have found that employers are willing to accommodate, especially if you frame it as a temporary challenge with a clear plan for managing your responsibilities.
Risk of Rescission: While legal protections exist, some firms may still rescind offers for reasons they can justify as unrelated to your diagnosis. However, this is less likely in reputable firms, as the reputational and legal risks for them are significant.
Support and Advice: If you're unsure how to navigate this, consider consulting with an employment attorney or HR professional to understand your rights and how to approach the conversation with your new employer. Additionally, seeking advice from others who have faced similar challenges (e.g., through forums or support groups) can provide valuable insights.
Ultimately, your health should be the priority. If the firm is not supportive, it may not be the right environment for you during this critical time.

not advice (sorry), but I’m so sorry you’re going through this and hope you’re doing okay🩵
Thanks honestly even a brief message from a stranger online helps a ton
First; that's a real kick in the teeth so positive vibes your way and sincere wishes for a good prognosis and outcome.
Second; If they rescind your offer for that reason, you'd need only call a couple of attorneys and not need to worry about money again. Especially in a blue state.
Since they would never rescind or terminate you for that reason; it may be worth calling an attorney to find out what you could expect. Discover exactly what you are obligated (and not obligated) to disclose (probably nothing) and understand what they can or cannot do so you can navigate it confidently when you do show up and make the revelation.
