2022 Guide to Living in NYC

Looking to move to NYC pretty soon and will be working in Midtown Manhattan. I have read several guides on the web and even posts on WSO similar to this topic but it seems that many of the view points change each year, by industry, age demographic, and budget.

I am hoping to gain an insight on what some specific items here:

-Broker Fees: Is 15% a standard, is this simply a scam, or do Brokers actually help? -How far is too far to commute? -Insight on neighborhoods, and what some pro's or cons might be -What do utilities look like for you on a monthly basis? -Is having on-site laundry a game changer, or do you get by without it easily?

What do you wish someone would have told you before you moved to NYC? What do you know now that you wish you knew sooner about living in NYC?

About me: I will have a roommate, but am preparing for this move as if I was moving alone. My rent budget is $2,500 but am targeting the $2,000 range (although this is looking less possible). Always looking to keep rent as cheap as possible of course. I cook at home for at least 2 meals a day, but accepting if that needs to change. I am targeting a 20 min commute in all weather.

Party's and bars are not a huge priority to me.

I have written this post for my own benefit, but I certainly hope it helps others along the way!
