Accents in finance

I have been told that my accent witll be an issue for me during applications for summer internships next year. For context, I have a slight west country accent. It is no way thick but it does sound different. Seniors at uni have told me that changing my accent and speaking more "posh" will aid me during applications. I have recieved a spring offer with the way I normally talk but the words of my seniors (and the fact that everyone I have interacted with at these banks have pretty posh accents) has me wondering if my accent may be an obstacle in future applications.

I doubt if accents really matter cuz London banking is full of people from outside Britain-In fact none of the interviewers I met at AC at a BB was from Britain, and they speak with very heavy foreign accents, not even British accent

I think that the Dudley accent is incredibly ugly. But you do not need to change your accent, I mean think about it, you're going to be working with people from all over the world. Would a French person change to an RP or similar accent when speaking in English? No.

Just make sure you're understood. You're going to be interacting with a lot of European and MENA clients the further you go in your career, and whilst changing your accent certainly isn't necessary, other localism should go (i.e., using words, phrases, or grammar which is not standard).

One of my friends from college has this super slow American Country accent. The first time I met him I thought he was a little slow. But, then I heard he was in contention for Valedictorian and I was surprised. He is genuinely a very smart guy, don't let the accent fool you. He is a global IB industry head at GS/MS now.
