Am I retarded for moving to West Village

I just moved from East Village to West Village recently. I was paying 2000/month at my previous place and now will be paying roughly 2600/month + broker fee. I love West Village but is it worth the added fee and ~7k in more rent per year? Just would like to know if this was a retarded move on my part.

I’m assuming OP is living with roommates since studios are much pricier even the smallest ones. OP is probably in a rent controlled unit but still 2600 is ridiculously low for WV. Definitely right decision so long as you can pay rent. I understand hesitance with upfront broker fees and probably the ridiculous random fees added on to moving into a unit in WV, but it’s fucking west village

Depends on your goals, if you can afford it then it’s exponentially nicer than shit village and will make your time in New York much more memorable.

I think, for overall life purposes, as long as you’re saving and investing in line with your goals then enjoy it and feel good about it.

most finance people do a year or two in west village. It’s awesome

West Village is one of the nicer areas of NYC, I'm guessing you're either living in a closet or have roommates? If the $7k difference is marginal in terms of how much you make, I'd say it's worth it if living in the nicer neighborhood contributes meaningfully to your quality of life. It's one of the only places I'd personally consider living if I had to move back to the city.

When did Gen Z get "social network"ed into dropping the "the"? Or is this a transplant thing these days? Even when I moved to New York as a transplant like 15 years ago, everyone still used the "the". Everyone who has posted has done it as well - makes me feel old.

And to the original poster - you are not going to care about that extra $7k in rent (even less when you net it against the reduced money / time savings by not having to take transportation from East to West whenever you want to socialize in the West Village) in 10 years time. Enjoy it!

I remember when I made this move after living in the East Village for 2 years after graduation -  I walked into Rosemary's (this really dates me, it had just opened) on a Friday night and I looked around and thought to myself "why the hell do I not live over here?". I have no idea what this place is like now, but it was just stacked with talent back then.

East Village is king.
