Anybody see Game Change on HBO? I hope they Exaggerated how ignorant Palin was, the whole bit about the Queen of England running the country and Saddam Hussein being behind 9/11 was truly frightening

I enjoyed it but I was left with a question for my liberal friends: She's either an idiot or an evil genius, but she can't be both, right?
It seemed like the movie wanted to have it both ways, that she was this Machiavellian manipulator behind the scenes but she didn't know what the Fed was or that Iraq wasn't behind 911.
I thought Julianne Moore had her down cold, though, and I never would have cast Ed Harris as McCain but he did a fantastic job too.
There's a theory that Palin is an evil genius?
I never heard this evil genius theory. My take on the movie was that it was a massive failure for the McCain campaign to not have properly vetted her and she was so out of touch with reality that she didn't know better herself to not join the campaign. I can't say she is an idiot for not knowing some things, but she is certainly an idiot for thinking she can be VP without knowing these things
Now I'm curious to see the movie.
The book was more of a character study on all the main folks. And it painted Palin in a more sympathetic light than I think most people would expect. Basically, she was a state politician given the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to become VP, to go from small town politics to the national stage. If you were in her shoes, regardless of whether you feel you're ready or not, if you have ambition, you'd be foolish not to grab that chance if it was offered to you. So the real responsibility then lies with the McCain camp for even choosing her in the first place. With McCain, at least from the book - they characterized it as a byproduct of McCain's biggest personality flaw: his impulsiveness. He had a tendency to make decisions without really thinking them through (basically painting him as the polar opposite of Obama - who was shown at times to be too analytical and tentative at times), and his choice of Palin was just one of his many impulsive decisions.
Sarah Palin is cut from the same cloth as the Kardashians, the Jersey Shore cast, Paris Hilton, Jessica Simpson, etc.
They may not have a lot of "book knowledge", but they have exceptional street smarts - they have an intuitive grasp of what will garner a lot of attention; an innate media savvy so to speak. In short, what they lack in book smarts, they more than make it up in terms of how to turn it on for the camera. This skill is mutually exclusive from book smarts - counterexamples may include Mitt Romney (very book smart, but seems to lack street savvy), Jon Huntsman, John Kerry, Al Gore, etc.
I didn't see Game Change yet, but I've read the book. From what I know, the film focused mostly on the Sarah Palin story, whereas the book (like most books) covered multiple narratives (including plenty on the Clinton-Obama primary) of which the Sarah Palin story was just one. I actually thought the book was good - an easy read, but the authors really did a great job of humanizing all the main characters (the Obamas, the Clintons, the McCains, the Palins, and their staff members) - even with Palin, you were able to see her as a person, and not some caricature - from what I remember of the book, they certainly didn't mince words, but they also tried to show her point of view: that she was suddenly thrown into the spotlight totally unprepared, and came close to a few nervous breakdowns during the campaign because of it, and that when the McCain camp felt that she was becoming more of a liability, they tried to throw her under the bus - and as such she felt totally used: lauded as a savior and then suddenly avoided like the plague. In fact, the person who came across the worst in the book was McCain: as a cranky old man who was impulsive, disorganized, and destructively cynical about the whole thing (but then again if you spent 3+ decades in politics, you'd probably be way too cynical as well).
