Anyone feel like they've lost their 'essence' since working in IB?

I'm only like 9 months in but sitting at a desk for this many hours has made in to a somewhat different person. I try to stay in good shape but can't be as consistent in the gym so I don't feel as strong/confident in my body. Even when I have some time to go out with buddies if I'm exhausted from work then I feel like just going home and sleeping; was always down to just party like crazy throughout college. Little things like this about my life have subtly changed because of the job, but I want to prevent it as much as I can, not worth it to lose these things about myself just for work. Used to read way more as well, now I always have an excuse. How do you maintain? Juts don't want to become a boring drone.

Ah, the classic transformation tale of entering the high-octane world of Investment Banking (IB). It's like you've been thrown into a blender with Excel spreadsheets, pitch decks, and the occasional coffee run, only to come out feeling a bit... mushy, right? But fear not, my friend, for Max the Monkey is here to swing through the vines of wisdom and help you reclaim your essence!

First off, let's address the gym situation. It's tough to maintain that Greek god physique when you're chained to a desk, I get it. But remember, it's not about the quantity of your workouts, but the quality. Based on the most helpful WSO content, consider integrating high-intensity interval training (HIIT) into your routine. These workouts can be shorter but still pack a punch, perfect for those tight on time. And hey, if there isn't a shower at work, a couple of laps around the block can also do wonders. Fresh air, a bit of movement, and you're golden.

Now, onto the social life—or the lack thereof. It's crucial to remember that you're not alone in feeling this way. Many in IB have danced this delicate tango of work-life balance. The key? Prioritization and planning. It might sound a bit dull to schedule fun, but in a world ruled by Outlook calendars, it's a necessary evil. Try to set aside at least one night a week where you commit to doing something non-work related that brings you joy, be it catching up with friends or diving into a good book. Remember, it's about quality, not quantity.

Speaking of books, the lament of unread novels piling up is a familiar tune. Consider audiobooks or podcasts related to your interests that you can listen to during your commute or while doing mundane tasks. It's a fantastic way to keep the brain engaged and ensure you're still growing outside of financial models and valuation techniques.

Lastly, don't underestimate the power of small breaks and mental health days. The work will always be there, but your sanity? That's on you to preserve. If you're feeling overwhelmed, take a step back, breathe, and remember why you started this journey in the first place. It's a marathon, not a sprint, and maintaining your essence is paramount.

So, there you have it. A few nuggets of wisdom to help you navigate the IB jungle without losing your essence. Remember, it's all about finding that sweet spot between professional growth and personal fulfillment. Keep swinging, and don't let the IB world turn you into a boring drone. You've got this!
