They're net cringe.
This new generation of kids will be interesting to see how they turn out. I’m not condoning bullying but it sure as shit helped me flatten out to normalcy. Market was over saturated from lockdowns, it’s starting to slow down as I see it.
Influencers drive consumption, if they didn't companies would not pay them to endorse products. Consumption is good for the economy because it encourages more production which increases the country's GDP.
chumpchimp Interesting perspective. I’ll add, influencers are an extension of “Hollywood” or the “famous.” Fame drives consumption both directly and indirectly. Good take
This is what I was considering when asking this question
They are not responsible for a net increase in consumption though. Its just a case of consumption moving from one marketing channel to another - old style TV/newspapers to new style social media influencers. If it wasn't being done through influencers it would be done through something else.
Personally I look forward to this influencer phase of society being over. Just hope its not replaced with something worse.
Bingo
If the government forced you to sit and watch 4 hours of ads every single day that would also drive consumption, and therefore GDP.
Would you consider a 4 hour period of mandatory ads each day (of the governments choosing in order to maximize consumption) a net positive for society?
Absolute net negative with the obscene compensation in the entertainment industry. Their burden on economy outweighs the efficiency it brings.
I’m all for free market capitalism but I’d be more than open to regulating marketing budgets and getting these people back behind the grill flipping burgers where they belong.
Define influencers, if you wanna learn or improve a skill, from bodybuilding to python, you can find some expert to help on youtube and stuff.
If we are talking about tick tockers or instagram douchebags popping bottles and acting like they are the shit without ever doing something of any meaning, its a big negative.
Those people who build hot wheels tracks in their backyards are definitely value add. If we can roll them up with the Reddit bots and add a couple of countdown videos we can really recognize some synergies here.
Idk I might be looking back to the pre-Instagram and TikTok days with rose-colored glasses, but I would say net positive before Instagram and TikTok (and maybe throw in Vine too, as the original TikTok before TikTok) because the main "influencers" prior to that were generally making longer-form content that you generally sought out to learn about a specific niche topic that in the past, you'd be harder pressed to find online. And with longer-form media, it's generally less about instant gratification.
All these reels / clips / etc. have really made it a strong net negative because now it's all about stupid dances, instant gratification, and chasing clout.
Seriously, what kind of question is this? The modern influencer is absolutely net negative on avg
If people are making educational content and are qualified in one form or another to speak on the topic (it's their job, formal education on the topic, etc.) or their content is at least entertaining then I would say it's a net positive, but some of the fitness influencers and the like out there peddling bro science so they can sell their supplements are definitely a net negative. It's kinda like when interns and prospects chime in on WSO for topics they aren't even remotely qualified to address and give terrible advice to someone with a genuine question.
Before influencers women just wanted men to be taller than them, now they want you to be 6 foot tall because thats what they were told. Just one of many examples of how influencers negatively affected both genders.
Net positive. Before Charli Damelio I didn't know what to do with all my free time
