Associates and VP could do with a bit more Please and thank you after every sentece :)

So i have been working in front office for about a month now and I have figured that despite people can be really nice and polite outside the office, that is not always the case on the inside. I am a junior guy , so whatever i say here does not apply to any of the 'higher ups'.

I mean what is the problem by saying a genuine THANK YOU for the junior guy that kept busting his ass to get the pitch perfectly done during the course of the day AND NIGHT for you to put it in front of the client and gloat about the bank's capabilities.

Also when the phone rings for the other team across the room and I am curtious enough to take your calls, dont just say TRANSFER IT in an angry tone , a please won't hurt. I know that you might be under pressure, but you are not the only one.

Anyway, its just might be the culture or even the country's culture........but would not it be nice to be more polite towards the junior guy who s busting his ass working for ya instead of him getting demotivated? Maybe top it with a smile as well.

I am not whining, but I think some simple manners can work miracles with the guys that are under your supervision!!

Welcome to finance.

While I understand your point, that's just the way it is at a lot of banks. It's often a cutthroat culture, and sometimes I think the senior guys get a little bit of pleasure out of "hazing" the analysts - it's a bit of a power thing, as much as some of them may deny it. It's part of your job to suck it up and return the angry tones with smiles. It's like pledging - endure the misery to get what you want (that PE job).

- Capt K - "Prestige is like a powerful magnet that warps even your beliefs about what you enjoy. If you want to make ambitious people waste their time on errands, bait the hook with prestige." - Paul Graham

Just think of when you can be in their position (whether you are nice or mean). Suck it up, stick with it, put on a smile, and persevere. CaptK's post explains it all. Just keep yourself motivated.

Thx guys,

I definitely do stick with your advices everyday and i do not have problems with any of the teams till now......I am quiet lucky to get a job in these awful times and am quiet down to earth with the fact. I am not complaining about the hard work either; not that by anymeans i am a sucker for hard work, but i am quiet good at adapting.

Its just that i though when people move up in banking they might become more humble and forget all this nonesense about power and beating the other guy to the ground loool maybe it differs from one person to the other though :)

Cheers

You really expect a please and thank you to do your job? Unless you are volunteering out of the goodness of your heart you are being paid to do what they tell you to do. They have all been working as hard or harder then you for years so maybe they don't see your all nighters as some great sacrifice. IB is a thankless job as are most, welcome to the real world.

A prime example of misinterpretation of sentences or feelings you might have and writing about. I said in the very first post I am not whining and I do not mind the hard work.

Would not you agree it would be more pleasent if there was a thank you though. I get paid for my job (though not that much and I mean seriously , the bank I work in probably pays the least for junior staff compared to others. That is not a topic of discussion here though) and I do my job well or at least that is what I have been told.

I just think that when people apply manners to their daily speech instead of telling someone 'to do what they tell you to do' is better and sound less agressive. That is just my opinion though.

If you speak or write to your colleagues the way you do on this post, I really can't blame anyone in your bank for being curt to you.

Would it be nice? Yea, sure, I guess. But it's not going to happen, so don't sweat it. It has to do with all the reasons stated above, the corporate culture, a little bit of hazing, and the fact that they probably got the same when they were in your shoes. Keep crushing work and keep it moving.

So your point is "wouldn't it be nice if people were nicer to each other?" Really? Banking is a tough business, you don't get respect until you earn it. It sounds like you are a typical self entitled new guy who hasn't done anything to earn the respect of those higher up but thinks he deserves it. You get disrespected because until you know what you are doing you are not pulling your weight and they have to pick up your slack.

Like everyone has said, that is banking. Really though I guess we have become obsessed with the words Thanks and Please, if not, why do you need a Thank you because you just did what you are being paid to do, or why they need to tell you please. I understand the need for people to be polite in the workplace, but there is a difference between helping out in the office and helping a stranger at the train station.

Guys guys guys .......

While some people say that they don t give you respect because of you not pulling your weight and you earn stuff like that......there is even a guy that said you are one of those new guy that think they are entitled to....etc.

You do not even know me. If you read the earlier posts , I said I am not whining, I do not mind the hard work, I know its the culture. Maybe the correct question like JUDOWNED said is "would not it".

I am doing my work and as I said I have been told I am alright, much better than other junior people that joined (Again I do not have to say stuff like this or gloat). Anyway reading the posts above maybe i just have to change my style (i.e do not expect to hear those words, me say those words, and if someone at the same level as me I would not tell them these words) ......anyway its nice to see more experienced people giving their opinion aboutt this. I am located in london at the moment.

Cheers

I feel for ya... But if you don't like it - quit. No one is forcing you. Go start your business and instruct your staff to be polite to each other. Or join a different firm. BUT STOP WHINING!

loool ok no more replies to this. I WAS NOT WHINING. It was just a thought......it was a mistake to have ever thought it :) Everybody is great and they all treat each other in a great way .

I'd rather get sincere thank you's. I don't thank or say please if I don't mean it, just doesn't feel deserved. We're all used to throwing it around but it just gets diluted. If they really appreciated your work they would compliment you.

========================================= We are excited to formally extend to you an offer to join Bank of Ameria

Listen bud, my boss tells me plz and ty once in a while. If I. You know what "ty" or "ok" are the same shit, I could careless he could say..."fuck", "shit", "fix this moron". It's all the same.

The only time I want to hear the "plz" and "ty" is come bonus season. Like "ty for your hard work here is this really big check". Or "plz go and celebrate with some hookers and blow, here is this large check for your hard work".

That is how most analysts feel, I would say.

Yea i totally get that. Maybe i just was not used to the culture. Now that I am in it and see other people living the same situation, it makes me feel alright. I just thought it was over here. I would not have brought it up if I knew that we are all in the same boat.

I assume thatt most of the people here are from the US. Anybody thinks US has a chance against Ghana in the upcoming world cup game ??

I'm going to assume by your writing that you are not a native English speaker so I'll cut you some slack. Your whole original post sounds like whining, saying that you are not whining doesn't change that. You just have to learn to not take the rudeness personally. If you let on that it bothers you it will only get worse. Showing weakness in the shark tank of IB is going to get you eaten alive.
