What Went Wrong With… Project Power? – WHAT WENT WRONG WITH…?

Best of 2018-2023, from what I've seen:

Ford v Ferrari

Parasite

Knives Out

Everything Everywhere All At Once

Top Gun

Ready or Not

A Quiet Place

Annihilation

1917

The Irishman

If anyone mentions a Marvel movie I will ensure you get a MS.

Ford V Ferrari was basically a Marvel movie bro. Top Gun was fun but come on, it is a sad state of cinema if that is one of the BEST films. Annihilation sucked I didn't even finish it. I never saw much of 1917 either but what I saw was a gimmick. Martin Scorsese is washed up and The Irishman was an alright movie but nothing near as good as some of his classics when he still had that magic touch. Let's see what else. A Quiet Place I never saw either but looks like A24 dogshit. Parasite is the only good movie you mentioned as far as what I have seen or could tell.

1917 and Ford v. Ferrari were so boring they’re what you watch to calm down before bed. Zero dramatic tension.

Top Gun was old fashioned summer blockbuster — light entertainment that’s Hollywood at its best. Everyone knows it’s going to end with good guys winning. Only question is, does Tom Cruise character die?

Oppenheimer was fantastic. I really have to give Christopher Nolan props on dealing with such a dialogue heavy script and executing masterfully.

Top Gun: Maverick was a slap in the face wake up call to how far hollywood has fallen when it comes to making content, especially summer blockbusters. The movie itself was nothing that special in terms of plot (visuals and dog fight footage was remarkable), very paint by the numbers. If it came out in early 2000s, or 90s, or 80s, it would do well but would just be a typical blockbuster.

But in todays age holy shit was it refreshing:

- absolutely no forced political nonsense

- diverse cast but doesnt beat you over the head with it. Zoomers and millennials act like movies in the last 10 years have only had blacks or women in them. No, they just now call more attention to it

- takes itself seriously. Yes, there is humor. But not Marvel quips every 10 seconds

- Relatively small stakes, not everything has to be some world ending cgi shit flinging fest

- just a fun movie

You can go back and look at other blockbusters (Independence Day, Die Hard, Terminator, etc. etc.) and none of this would seem odd. But in 2023 all I could think of leaving the theater was 'man, they dont make movies like this anymore'. Sad.

Your point on the marvel quips is no joke. Anytime I hear one it just takes me out of the movie. Happened at the beginning of the Last Jedi (prank call joke) when I saw it in theaters and was like wtf?

Haven’t seen this

Sure thing! Over the last five years, I watched some brilliant work in different genres. "Get Out" blended horror and social commentary, while "The Shape of Water" offered an unbelievable love story. Check out "Mad Max: Fury Road" for unparalleled action, or try "La La Land." There are so many cool movies out there to pick from! By the way, do you guys have any recommendations on the new movies out? I want to go to the cinema with my girlfriend, but we can't decide what to watch. Thanks!

Tár was a great movie, but had a lower box office at around $30M. Cate Blanchett won the Golden Globe and the BAFTA for her performance. The movie is just a bit niche for a wide audience.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood was great. The whole Bruce Lee thing was so overblown. That scene is barely anything in the movie.

I enjoyed Dune Part I, but like the Lynch version better. Will be watching the IMAX Part II here in a bit.

Oppenheimer was great and RDJ stole the show, but the last hour drags a bit, and I say that as someone with a palate for 4 hour movies when needed.

There have been some fantastic films over the past five years! “Parasite” is a standout—so gripping and original. “Dune” is another one that really impressed me with its epic scale and visuals.

I recently went on a movie binge and found a site with filme bune online. I ended up discovering a few hidden gems I hadn’t heard of before. It felt like finding a secret stash of great films. If you’re looking to explore recent releases, that site might have some cool, lesser-known options that could surprise you. It’s a fun way to dig deeper and find something you might have missed otherwise.

any time movies come up I just say Pork Bellies If you know you know.

The only difference between Asset Management and Investment Research is assets. I generally see somebody I know on TV on Bloomberg/CNBC etc. once or twice a week. This sounds cool, until I remind myself that I see somebody I know on ESPN five days a week.
