Can you definitively prove that life is preferential to death?
I'm not religious, nor do I believe in the whole "afterlife" story. Staunchly agnostic.
That being said, how do you prove that life is better than death? It's something I try to rationalize on a weekly basis.
As far as the medical literature, I've poured over numerous studies in medical school archives.
Yet I've been unable to find any documented case of the living speaking with the dead.
Said simply, we cannot ask them [the deceased] how it's going on the other side.
So without any evidence, aren't we making (one of) the grandest assumption(s) of mankind?

This is a discussion forum and he brings up critically intense topics that should be brainstormed about in arena's like WSO, especially given the raw intellectual horsepower on this forum.

Not true, in most of the cases where people provide a solid reply to MM's posts, or ask him points/questions directly he barely replies and kills the conversation. That's why half of replies are lazy.
I agree totally. MonacoMonkey drives a Maserati and works at HF, super smart guy and I always enjoy reading this posts. Sure its a bit different but I love the variety. I think the reference to the comment above you is that MM said he has thought about suicide when flying - this was in reference to the recent Dash 8 crash in Seattle, which the guy killed himself.

I'm spiritual/religious, but avoiding that topic since it's an entirely different one - For me, the simple fact that living beings (at all levels, not just cognitive/self-aware beings) have a will to survive/procreate (generally speaking) is proof that there's a purpose to life. Just because we haven't figured out definitively what that is yet doesn't mean that there is no purpose for- or in - it.
My advice is to stop taking everything so seriously and just enjoy the ride.
Religion aside, and I do believe in an afterlife that will reward those who merit eternal life and punish those who do not, does it matter? I can live for hopefully 80-85 years, I can be dead for the rest of eternity. Even if it’s worse, it’s still pretty awesome to experience.
Even if I think basketball is not as fun to watch as football, I’d still watch basketball tonight if I was going to watch football exclusively every day after.
There are an almost infinite number of things to do here on earth. If you’re bored, it’s 100% your fault. Life isn’t going to be new and exciting in every moment, but if you can’t find satisfaction and/or things that aren’t boring, it’s on you.
No one can know which is better, or even if there is an afterlife. What I do know for certain is this life exists so I'm going to enjoy it and not worry about something I have no control over.

Death will be fairly boring, though you won't be able to feel bored. Life is chaos, life is exciting. It's like taking a road trip somewhere. You can choose how much fun you have consciously. Gotta pull yourself up by the bootstraps though.
Idk if you ever played Tony Hawk Pro Skaters, but it's like the balance meter while grinding. it's a little hard to get to stability, but kinda easy to maintain while there. Slipping too far makes it harder to get back. I think you're slipping down one side and need a boost to go back up.
I'm most of the way through Autobiography of a Yogi. It's one of my first forays into eastern philosophy, I had only picked it up because Steve Jobs read it once a year so I figured it must be decent. Shit gets weird at times so you have to have an open mind, but I like how it pulls you to a better place, whereas Western Philosophy seems to end at a void and depression. I think depression is a waste of time, resources, and a human being's potential.
To answer your question, no we cannot know unless you'll believe those that claim they speak with the dead. You have the time and money, go seek a bunch out and find some way to determine their validity. I think most are full of shit myself, but I do believe we have a lot of learning to do when it comes to this area of the universe. I'd personally love to join a monastery for a few months and give myself wholly to the ideology.
