College Football Playoffs
Open thread with thoughts on the playoff action from yesterday and going forward. Some random q's I have but feel free to talk about whatever:
1. Texas definitely got away with targeting on that last drive for ASU, but should we ever blame outcomes on one play? There's any # of plays that would've tipped the scales in a close game. And didn't ASU kinda get away with targeting on the previous drive that would've ended ASU's chances if it's called?
2. What to make of Ohio State looking unstoppable these last two games, how in the world did these same guys lose at home to Michigan?
3. What do we think of tonight's matchup? I see two elite defenses. ND offense is mediocre. Georgia offense is good w/ Beck, but how good with the backup? Gut says Georgia.
4. Who wins it all?
1. Glad the refs didn't alter the course of the game by making a targeting call. I could see a way where this is the best watch of the entire playoff if OSU blows out TEX.
2. It was disappointing to see Oregon come out so flat, I turned this game off around half way through the second quarter. When OSU can effectively air it out nobody (except for Oregon at their best) can compete. TEX will have their hands full next week.
3. Brain says ND, gut says UGA. Obviously, Stockton is the X-factor here. If UGA can get him to where he can just manage the game and not make any mistakes (costly turnovers, convert in the redzone), I see them winning here.
4. Ohio State. If they continue to play like they have the past 2 games, they'll have no problem steamrolling any potential opponents.
1. Agreed that targeting was missed, however, ASU lost the game when they gave up the TD on 4th and long that would've ended it.
2. As the talent gap continues to shrink at the top end of CFB, you're going to see more parity. Throw in a terrible OSU offensive gameplan and one of the most heated rivalries in history and you get a UM upset. OSU is probably the best remaining team, but I doubt they can continue to play at the same level as the last two games. Their OL is still a liability and one that UT might remind us of.
3. ND looks better than they have in a while, but their schedule was pretty weak so I imagine UGA will magnify their issues. I'm going Dawgs by 10.
Don’t see anyone stopping OSU offense. They looked great vs Oregon
HIGH TIDE!
Thanks for all the comments so far, helpful to hear everyone's take.
Not sure what to make of this PSU / ND matchup. All year long, I've seen a lot of bad coaching around the sport, including from James Franklin. I'm not picking on him, just saying he's the norm which is bad. Bad play calling and clock management seems to be the standard. Freeman seems like one of the exceptions to the rule, always seems a step ahead of the action. I feel like that might be the difference in this one.
