Comcast Again?!?

I woke up this Sunday morning, dragged myself out of the bed, and got myself a cup of hot coffee before sitting down in front of the computer to surf the web. Frankly, I have been pretty busy and have fallen behind the news for the past couple days. It seems that a lot has happened in the world recently, notably the nuclear pact with Iran. However, what caught my eyes on WSJ was the potential acquisition of Time Warner Cable that may revolutionize the industry.

Time Warner Cable, a $38 billion company, is in the early stages of courtship by companies such as Comcast and Charter Communications Inc. for acquisition. In the vibrant media & telecom industry, I am sure investors and investment bankers are excited to see how this game will play out. At the moment, Time Warner Cable is actively pursued by Charter that is attempting to regain some of the market share in an industry that is undoubtedly dominated by Comcast.

Historically, Comcast has been known to its competitors as the strategic thinker that has racked up revenues using ridiculous price discrimination strategy and ownership of vast amounts of content. As the stackelberg leader, Comcast spends incredulous sum of money in maintaining geographical dominance and offering premium services to its users. If Comcast actually decides to actively pursue Time Warner, we are about to witness the rise of a monopoly (okay maybe that's an exaggeration). Nevertheless, an important thing to note is whether or not the Justice Department will bring in the antitrust suit and prevent further expansion of Comcast's cable domain.

Personally, as someone who is very interested in the media & telcom industry, I am really curious as to find out what will happen. Will Comcast pursue TW with Charter? Will it attempt an acquisition at all? Will my cable price ever go down?

Will Google Fiber roll out nationally already?!?! I'm so sick of Comcast.

You're complaining about Comcast while I'm sitting here wishing I wasn't stuck in a building that only receives service from TWC. Seriously, Time Warner can blow me. To date, the worst, most unreliable, aggravating, inconsistent home Internet service I've ever encountered.

The last thing I want to put up with after an impossibly long stretch at work is to have to repeatedly press the reset button on my router in a cold, homicidal rage when the wireless blinks in and out every 5 minutes. No matter how much money you pay, no matter what level of service you purchase ... it finds a way to fail.

Give me FiOS or Fiber .. anything. God have mercy on my soul.

Agree with this 100%. Having Comcast after 2+ years of TWC is a fucking treat.

Double post, simply validating my comment regarding the quality of connection.

This is just a repeat of a century plus long cycle. Telecom companies buy each other up, are forced to break up and then re purchase each other. Everyone makes tons of money on both sides of the parade. So nothing new to see here.

Comcast isn't my fav, but they are probably the best out there (when it comes to cable providers). I do hope Google keeps growing (as well as Fios) to simply provide some pricing pressure.

FIOS has reached is coverage maximum for the near future. It was supposed to be much larger but the costs associated with grid installation in the NE has halted expansion.

The only planned FIOS expansion will be in new constructions in a few select areas of the country.

Investigate what exactly? Antitrust laws only take effect if a company uses its monopoly status to force unfair business practices on consumers and competition.

Most all mega mergers are reviewed by the DOJ's antitrust division. I am pretty sure there will be quite a few concessions and divestitures for this to go through.

Haven't heard much about FIOS, but apparently Google Fiber is the best thing to ever happen to cable internet.
