Commuting: LIRR and Metro North
I just read an old thread about commuting, and it seemed like the general consensus was that a commute of >1 hr and finance hours do not mix. One aspect that the thread seemed to overlook was that most people were referring to driving or taking a subway. I was wondering what the consensus on the LIRR or Metro North is?
The LIRR and Metro North are 10 times better than a crowded subway (most of the time). As long as you have a seat, you can turn a crowded train into an office with a laptop and a mobile hotspot. You can respond to emails, get caught up on financial news, read research reports, and even do some financial modeling (if you have ninja like concentration abilities).
So even if you are able to have a very productive commute, is it a good idea to spend an hr or more commuting? Getting work done on the train isn't exactly the same thing as face time in the office, so I can see where that would be a problem in some groups.

I somewhat disagree with the premise of this question, as I believe the average mid-level in finance lives in the suburbs (Westchester, CT, LI, or NJ) and has a 1hr+ door to door commute. Yes, it's probably not feasible to have this commute the first ~3-5 years in finance when your hours are longer and less predictable, but once you get more stability and consistency in your working hours, it's not so bad. Trains are much more comfortable than the subway or even the bus, in my opinion, and many people do work on their laptops.
Everything is a tradeoff at the end of the day, and most people who commute do so to have more space in the suburbs for their families. Also, some younger folks live with their parents in the suburbs, so they have a terrible commute but save on rent. If someone is avoiding $3.5k rent in NY by living with family in (Mineola or insert suburb), they are basically making an extra $5k/month.
I have a friend in IB at MS/GS and he lives in CT and says every week without fail he goes into the office in NYC Mon and Fri and is traveling Tue-Thurs so the commute isn't that bad.
He must be senior to be in IB with that commute? Seems miserable at VP level or below
