Debating buying a Tesla Model 3

Hey fellas

Debating buying the Tesla model 3, the long range version will cost $50k though there are some potential tax credits. Right now I'm leasing a VW Jetta & will have the option to buy in 1yr (at $6k) which would be a good deal if I wanted to keep this car.

However, I've definitely admired Teslas for a while now & am wondering if it might just be better to buy it instead. In my mid-20s right now & kind of feeling like this is the time to buy & enjoy (vs. another 7-8yrs from now after I've gotten my money's worth from the VW). Quite torn on this decision, I know Elon also promised a $25k Tesla by 2023 (though he's usually under-delivered so maybe this is more like 2024-2025).

Anyone have any thoughts? Anyone own a Model 3 & want to share their experience?

Would normally say no to larger unnecessary purchases like that in your mid-20s, but as far as "luxury" vehicles go that last, maintain value relatively, and are stress-free, a Tesla would probably be the way to go. If you don't get bored of it first, no reason it won't last you for many years to come with little overhead.

Unless you actually plan on driving long distances relatively frequently, I would actually consider just getting the standard model. Don't have one myself but my friend with one mainly uses it for commuting (~40 miles) a day and has been on only 2 long distance road trips in two years (where you need to charge a few times regardless).

I bought the model Y almost a year ago and can sell it for the exact same price I bought it for

How much money do you now spend each month on gas? That would most definitely be taken into account. I recall my predicament. I was paying $800 a month for a camaro, and my monthly fuel expenses came to about $250. These costs seem excessive because I don't have the same income as you, but they accounted for significantly less than 10% of my net income. Due to my down payment, my current used car prices, the fact that I did not lose money on the Camaro for the year I owned it, and the fact that my gasoline expenditures have dropped to $50 per month, my monthly payment to move into the Tesla M3P is $689. Savings totaling $300 every month.

You must now ensure that you are attending to other critical financial matters, which it appears that you are. mortgage, 401(k), and IRA, which means you own rather than rent. That is all wonderful. Now, it simply depends on your priorities. Which would you choose—vacations, the Tesla Model 3, or something else? No one else can make this decision for you.

Decided not to. Happy with that decision given current environment haha

just want to keep my costs rational and save man. I spend on pretty much everything I want to, would be excessive to buy a model 3 honestly. Fallen out of love with if

Had one since 2019, if you are trying to save $$$, and the environment, then go for it. I do not have to service my car every 6months anymore.

SafariJoe, wins again!

I've had a Model 3 since December 2020. I didn't buy it for environmental reasons or to save money on gas or maintenance. I bought it because I wanted it. The car is fun to drive because it has great torque and very good handling; the sound system is terrific, too, which makes it a great car to just cruise in.

For what it's worth, I've had zero maintenance in 22 months. I haven't even changed the washer fluid yet--literally $0 in maintenance. I charge 98% at home at about $0.105/kWh, and at 1,000 miles per month, I use about 370 kWh of electricity on my car = $39/month in fuel costs. With 22,000 miles on my car, it's still worth several thousand dollars more today than what I paid for it.
