DEI is going the way of the dodo

In addition to the SCOTUS AA ruling, Trump's election, Starbuck's numerous successes, Trump's latest ruling banning DEI federally, below is the latest on how DEI is dying at the big banks. Can't count on it for new classes, merit is the way

Trump is also gonna issue a new EO in a few months banning DEI in private sector as well, to the extent that he can until it's codified by SCOTUS at some point after a big case

Banning DEI good

But revoking the equal opportunity act? Lol

Yes DEI needs to go which is the corporate version of affirmative action. We also need to legally ban nepotism (daddy is a client/ head of the group) hires which is the corporate equivalent of legacy admissions. If you disagree you’re a hypocrite because I can tell you right now nepo babies are in the strong running for most incompetent junior hires on the street - and we need to have fair merit based recruitment practices all around.

Would have to disagree here, nepo =/= DEI in terms of bad outcomes. I don't disagree that nepos are often superbly incompetent, but their presence serves a purpose. Doing a favor for daddy who's a client is "value" to the firm/guy who hired him that has the relationship. While it sucks and it's unfair for the sake of merit, nepotism will always be a factor among humans across the board because people will always show preference towards family vs others when given the option and the trade-off is minimal (really what does it cost an MD to have 1 dumbass analyst if closing daddy's deal nets 10x+ the kid's salary in fees).

DEI on the other hand is literally just racial quotas and has no effect on outcomes. No matter how virtue signaling the CEO/founder or institutional counterparty may be they're not going to give two fucks about diversity when it comes to making a deal happen, so it has no tangible upside for the firm. It makes sense to ban the government from mandating racial discrimination, not to let them hire anyone they want when there's other factors at play other than the candidate's competence.

Yeah no - preferential treatment is preferential treatment. No deal has ever been closed simply because because you hired daddy’s little boy so the dribble about the “value” of preserving nepo hiring practices is falling on deaf ears here. If we’re going to hold standards of merit then we need to hold standards of merit for all applicants not make any exceptions.

Also noting that there are plenty of nepo hires that are perfectly competent and earned their spot in the exact same way that there are perfectly competent DEI hires who earned their spot - that’s not what we’re talking about here. If we’re going to assume that DEI is bad because it inherently favors less qualified candidates on the basis of race/sex/etc., then we must also assume that nepo hires are equally bad because we are making exceptions for inherently less qualified candidates on the basis of”who they know”. If daddy’s little boy can’t take the time to study his behavioral and technicals like everyone else that’s his personal problem, not the firms.

The second you start doing non quantifiable mental gymnastics to justify your bias, the second you leave the opportunity for someone else to justify theirs as well.
