It depends on the person. If they are an extroverted person they are most likely to lead the conversation. They love to talk. Let them do the talking and ride the wave of the conversation. It is always safe to talk about sports and hobbies but avoid politics. Don't lie about anything, it will come back and bite you in the ass.

As for introverted people, they are not very open. Avoid awkward small talk and gain their trust first to make them more inclined to open up to you and develop the relationship.

With people you already know pretty well, just be yourself. Don't force a conversation just for the sake of it, if you have something exciting coming up or have cool news to share then go for it.

This post makes me imagine a Patrick Bateman-like character developing hobbies not for his own enjoyment, but just for something to bring up in conversations to convince fellow humans beings that he is like them.

The only thing my friends and I talk about is who got a table at Dorsia.

"If you always put limits on everything you do, physical or anything else, it will spread into your work and into your life. There are no limits. There are only plateaus, and you must not stay there, you must go beyond them." - Bruce Lee

Maybe get into a "Normal" hobby.  My go to is sports.  Guys of all races, religions, socioeconomic class, and political party follow sports.  It's such an easy way to connect people.  For example, If I'm buying groceries and I see the cashier with a Vegas Raiders hat, I can easily strike up a conversation with him about the team.

Another option is to listen to others and learn their perspective on life.  They can share a little about where they come from/what they like to do, and then they might ask you about your career/life.

If you know someone enough, conversation should come natural.  I'm an MBB intern from a T25 university and my best friend is an 1100 SAT/state school guy.  Completely different ways of life.  We talk about many things, from football to "wow that chick is stunning" to video games to how much of a joke classes are.  Sometimes I mention consulting to him, he's amazed that I would want to work a job that's 60 hours/week! It's honestly refreshing to get to know people with another perspective on life.

Know a kid who would memorize football stats and “follow” the most important games for the purpose of networking even though he had no interest in the sport lol

The... weather? Homie look outside and state what it is. But real talk, how is that all you think about? That sounds so boring. Why bring work with you 24/7. Do you ever take a break or do anything interesting/fun? Talk about that instead. I'm supposed to care about earning releases for some companies and I don't.
