Different titles in finance?
In IB/PE, I know the standard track is analyst->associate -> VP and so on.
Was recently speaking to someone in asset management, and apparently at big funds (fidelity and the like), undergrads come on as associates, get an MBA, and then would be promoted to analyst. They explained this and it made sense- an analyst is a research analyst, and an associate is short for associate research analyst. Any idea why IB/PE is different? Just curious what the logic is behind these titles
AM is screwy as F***. An acquisition had me going from "Manager" to "Sr. Analyst" which is apparently above manager here? I'm also now reporting to a SMD instead of a SVP, which I guess is an upgrade?
any idea why? seems like it would benefit the industry if there was just consistency. someone who did IB then went b school then went into asset management would be analyst -> associate -> analyst, which just seems dumb
Undergrads enter ER as associates at most sell-side firms as well. It's not just asset management.
