Do interviewers BS you?

Every interview I get, the interviewers are always complimenting everything I say during the whole thing and my overall demeanor (confident, energetic, great talker, etc) yet keep getting dinged. I’ve been at networking events and some of the other students interviewing seem like neurotic hardos.

What could I be doing wrong then? I don’t bother asking them what I did wrong because they always give back some vanilla answer with zero insight. One interviewer cut my interview time in half and I just bobbed back some casual, personal questions between the two just to kill their time. I knew I didn’t get it.

Yes, but not in ways that you can't easily figure out.

Disclaimer, I've got more time interviewing entry level employees and interns, than being interviewed

If you completely flubbed the interview you'll get a lot of 'thanks for coming's and other non-compliments. if you did well you'll normally get a lot of "thank you" type compliments. It doesn't mean you got the job.  You might be in the running, or even best candidate at that point, just to be steamrolled by a latter interviewee. I had a kid I was ready to hire for the summer once, but the final interviewee completely blew me away, and was horrifically overqualified. Without a doubt we hired her.  She learned nothing but was a ridiculously productive employee for the summer.  (before anybody asks, yeah, she was paid very well)

The only difference between Asset Management and Investment Research is assets. I generally see somebody I know on TV on Bloomberg/CNBC etc. once or twice a week. This sounds cool, until I remind myself that I see somebody I know on ESPN five days a week.

Great to know, thanks! You know I might as well ask. Since you do the interviews, what’s one thing that makes a candidate standout right away? I feel like the first impression matters the most, especially on behaviorals.
