Do you actually submit PTO or just email your team?
I’ve never actually submitted PTO in my 4+ years of working. Have always gotten my direct boss to approve and then will outlook calendar invite to anybody I work with closely.
My friend said he has to formally submit it to HR each time, even if it’s for one day. My career has been at private companies in the sub-$3B revenue range, whereas he’s at a much larger publicly traded firm.
I always submit it - large public company, think most large firms you have to. It's quick to put into the system + the manager approves and not HR. IMO it's helpful because that is the formal, official notice of PTO, your manager can't say they forgot/didn't see the calendar invite.
Same. Always just submit the request to the manager, they say ok, and then file it in the time tracking system. If it's something real bad and immediate, just an email to the management with a note I'll file it formally later. Usually they just come back with "take your time, I'll update the team and we'll deal with it later."
Usually if I need a single day off I don’t. Not gonna waste my hours on that. But for a longer vacation I would only because I don’t want to break any rules
I stopped submitting PTO after my fist vacation I took. I was traveling for a family event and I ended up working about 6-8hrs everyday, despite the fact that I request the time off and got the staffers approval. This was mostly due to shitty Associates and VPs, but at that point I really wasn't taking PTO, so I never officially requested time off again.
If your team actually respects your PTO, definitely use the correct channels.
