What is the maintenance like?

“The hard-charging V12 engine in the Murcielago is a tried and trusted unit and is unlikely to give trouble if properly serviced. Expect a major rebuild around the 50,000 mile mark though, to keep the engine ticking as it should.”

As some might know from my username, cars are kind of my thing. My main hobby which requires a lot of time and capital.

- Have done multiple car rallies, among them Gumball and others in the US and Europe
- Have driven cars on any continent of the world, EXCEPT for Australia/NZ
- worked on cars for more than 17 years now, owned a bunch, keep a few here and there

Favorite cars were 911s /w built engine/exhaust and fully tricked out suspension setup. My car history started with BMWs though, mostly 3 series- all of them from E30 to E9x. Currently working on E46 M3, a E30 325 is in pieces. My 911 hit a fox on the way home so an entire front is required.

The other side of the story is the storage, the tools, the paperwork/insurance, the GPS trackers, the cleaning/care products, the radar detectors, the laptops, the software, the cables, the parts and the travel related expenses and planning/the trips. If you are truly into cars as a hobby, these adjacent expenses will sneak up on you. They are substantial in making the entire hobby a better experience, turn you into a better mechanic and save time. But in absolute terms - these costs associated with just owning cars and DIYing everything are massive. My tool collection alone is worth more than an average car, storage/parts/maintenance/etc over the years adds so many thousands to your bills.. it is shocking.

The most unique driving experience was using FSD for the first time, it was eerie and fascinating at the same time. I am so excited what BEVs will bring in the future.

I have been around cars, the industry and the scene for a very long time, if anyone has any questions - happy to connect or make introductions, get a special car, etc.

All of this is a great hobby, but not something for someone who just wants to get from point A to point B.

My biggest dream would be to design a project car "from the ground up", like many youtubers do. Not just tuning/tricking out an existing one. But build one from scratch, a rat rod or a unique truck or something.

What cars do you drive?

Daily driver UK: BMW E92 (although not for long)
Daily driver US: 911 turbo with a few mods here and there
in pieces: E46 M3, E30 325
In storage: Lincoln Navigator which I am planning on selling now.
Another E30 touring is being prepped for compliant import to the US, car is on its way from Niedersachsen to Hamburg, then shipped to LA.
The E30 was never sold as the touring variant in the US and the imported ones are fairly unique.

I drive a manual F80 M3 competition. It's been my realistic dream car since high school, so felt great finally checking it off the list this year.

I always assumed I would get an R35 GTR next, but considering how dated they're getting I likely won't do that anymore. Lately I've been thinking 570S, but could see myself saving a few bucks and opting for an AMG GT C or GT S. Gonna be at least a few years until I can really consider one regardless.

On the more ridiculous side, I've always liked the FD RX-7 and the NA1 / NA2 NSX, but I just can't justify spending 100k+ on a 30 year old car of that sort. A gated manual F430 would be nice too.

Taking it a step further to something I will likely never be able to reasonably afford. Gated manual Murcielago or Ford GT.

Hypercar or equivalent? Zonda Cinque.

Carless at the moment - sold my car (Audi A4, I think 2017) pre-MBA to get some liquidity (major regret, a car would have been very helpful in my first year).

Dream car that I want to drive one day is a Pagani Huayra but I believe it's illegal in the States. For now, my dream is just to lease a BMW 3 series within a year of graduating from my program. Not much of a car person and hoping to move to a large city post MBA so would prefer not needing a car.

This is UK (just outside London)

Family car: 2022 Volvo XC90 - absolutely love it, carries children/dogs no problem, incredibly safe and just very well put together

Daily Driver: BMW 5 series, 330d F10 2016. One of the later F10 era models, bought with 25k on the clock in 2019 and have done another 50k since, honestly think it's one of the better cars ever made. Is quick enough to be good fun, averages 50mpg and I've had zero issues with it as it chews motorway miles up.

Dream Car: 911 - Young kids and a house move have it pushed it back, but intend to get one in about 5 years time. (Exact age/model I'm still deciding on!)

2018 Range Rover Sport SVR.

Love it - the cold start scratches the itch for the sport car currently. Plan is to add a muscle car (late 60s mustang, chevelle, or corvette) in the next few years and then add a low end supercar for fun.

Plan to always have a RR or Escalade in the fleet for me and ideally would love the for the (eventual) wife to be in a midsize SUV but will defer to her!

I like the idea of a GT3RS - althought that isn't really on the low end. I'm on the cusp of 30 so this is a couple years out, if I was thinking about it today I'd say, an older Gallardo could be fun - so maybe in a few years the Huracan will have come down to similar prices (~$140K or so for lowish mileage). A Vanquish could be an option too.

What about you?

Great taste - mustangs are great and they came back to Le Mans this year. A truly competitive and historic year across the entire industry / car scene especially with BWM returning to Le Mans after 25 years / the first and ever victory they took in 1999. Used to be a shelby fan but the launch of new M4 is amazing - a compatible boxy look to American muscles but also with much better handlings. There is also a beautiful as well as bittersweet story behind it- two young people met in Munich years ago, they took a tour in the BMW musuem and later on, the girl's favorite person in the world built a car just like how exactly she'd like it to be

Current car is a Ford Explorer. Have always said my next one would be an Audi R8, but I realized the optics around that aren't optimal (sometimes it is better to be low key). Have been looking at 2020s Porsche Macans / Mercedes GLC300 coupes lately. Probably will pull the trigger sometime between Christmas and next spring.

The jump after that will be a McLaren (optics won't matter at this point).
