Europe city-break this Autumn

Hey,

So as I noticed another topic about traveling I am going to ask a few questions as well.

In Autumn, not sure when precisely yet, some friends and me (3 guys, 3 girls) are looking to do a trip in Europe. So far our main idea is to go to Amsterdam (to visit Anne Frank´s house and see the museums of course), but what about Berlin or Warsaw? Depending when we go we probably only have 2 or 3 days to visit, where would you recommend? (only Netherlands, Northern Germany and Poland)

Also, on a side note, next Summer we want to do Eurorail (or roadtrip, tbd) around the Balkan countries and all that area of Europe: Romania, Bulgaria, Greece, Serbia, etc. Worth visiting in your opinions? Take into account my friends are Romanian, Bulgarian and Slovakian so language wise it won´t be too much of a problem.

Do you have 2-3 days per City or in total? Amsterdam is an awesome City, and definitely worth going. You can do a lot of exploring and the nightlife is also pretty cool! I've been there this spring and I'd say that 2-3 days is a good amount of time to get to know Amsterdam and see the most important parts. As for other cities to visit, I'd suggest Hamburg or Berlin (partly because I'm German ;). Hamburg is a really beautiful City, but Berlin probably has more sights to go to. Especially, since so many important historical Events took place in Berlin. So if you like seeing historically important venues and Museums, I'd suggest to go to Berlin. If you prefer a more beautiful City, I'd go with Hamburg. Unfortunately, I can help with the eastern european countries

Week-end trip so it would be one city per week-end, maybe we will do 2 week-ends so 2 cities, we have yet to decide. Thanks for your input, Amsterdam is looking like the most likely choice for the first trip. If we were to do Germany it would probably be mid-December, I´ve heard that there are very nice Christmas markets in Germany (I remember it was good in Prague so perhaps all the ones in Central Europe are good?). Taking that into account which city in Germany (or even Vienna, Prague, Budapest, etc.) would you recommend to visit in December for a week-end or maybe even longer, say 4-5 days? Still Hamburg and Berlin? I´ve went to Munich last summer so it´s not on my priority list. Everywhere else, why not? :)

Well if you Focus on going to a City with a nice Christmas market you want to go to Nurnberg, where the very first Christmas market took place, or Vienna (actually I've never been to Vienna - shame on me; but I heard its a nice City, it also has a beautiful xmas market). Maybe you could also combine both cities? If you have 5 days, you could go to Nurnberg first and later on to Vienna for 3 days. Also for Nurnberg you probably wont Need more than 2 days. You should also be able to cover most of Vienna in those 3 days. To be honest, I dont know about the Christmas markets in Hamburg and Berlin, there definitely are some, but those in Bavaria/Austria are probably more traditional and nicer.

Advice: Flying- can be much cheaper/easier than trains if you plan it out. Try fly during the middle of the week rather than early/late in the week as the fares are cheaper. Ryanair, BMI, Easyjet, and a host of other airlines are good for your budget. If you don't have it planned out then a Europass rail ticket might be a good idea but I still think flying may be cheaper. Hostels - obviously scour hostel websites to check what is cheapest

Places you should visit: Rome - definitely visit Rome if you are a history buff, it is super cool. Amsterdam, Barcelona - obvious must do's I've never been, but I hear Berlin is awesome. I would consider that.

I did Paris, Cannes, St. Tropez, Monaco, Rome Sardinia last year in 18 days and this year Barca, Mallorca, Ibiza, Amsterdam, Prague and Greece in a little longer (~23 days) so you can def. do it. Feel free to PM if you have any questions about what spots to hit.

I'm interested in doing the same kind of trip. I would think the Mediterranean is the place to be in June.

Personally I think that is a serious time crunch. You should provide leeway to stay at a place if you want to experience more of the culture. Also taking into account the actual travel by rail to these places. For rail look at www.railsaver.com I believe.

southernmonkeyWe were thinking about flying into London and out of Barcelona, hitting Paris, Amsterdam, Germany, Switzerland, Italy along the way.
I personally would exclude Switzerland (love Zurich, but I think it's no that much different from Germany or Austria, especially if you're on a tight schedule; plus it's really small) and rather go to Munich. Have you thought of Prague?

I will be traveling with only 2 other guys and we are willing to move pretty quick and drop some cash...

SVNR--Switzerland must stay on the list-->Interlaken, skydiving over the Alps and canyoning are a must.

I think we also may do Nice and make day trips to Canne and Monte Carlo...
