Failed out of 4year college

So I have a friend who failed out of college. I know that many people on this site is a Type A personality so I wanted to see if you could give me any advice on how to help my friend. He is going to be attending a community college and still does not know what he wants to do with his life. He did major in computer science in Univ and enjoys it but didnt do so hot in the classes.

I would say the number 1 thing he lacks is motivation and the ability to follow through. He seems to accept the fact that he is not smart (not true) and thus does not get as good of grades as his peer. Just wanted to hear your thought on how to help my friend get through this. Thanks guys. I really appreciate it.

I agree. Send an audition tape to MTV and see what happens.

I agree. Some people can go straight to college and do the work without ever experiencing the real world. For others it is best to take time off to work full time and see what's out there. It helps put things into perspective.

melvvvardo you see this friend every time you shave or brush your teeth?

That would be pretty scary if I did haha. It's a legit friend I am trying to help and thanks to everyone for the good advice!

Step 1: Travel to Africa Step 2: Take some pictures, film some videos Step 3: Make a film about how bad warlords & child soldiers are. Step 4: Market the film on Youtube/Facebook

Life's a marathon. Terrible cliche, but it's true. I didn't know what I wanted to do when I graduated 4 year university. It was a non-target, still strong regional school but none of the jobs available to us straight out of undergrad really seemed like anything I wanted to start a career with. I decided it would behoove me to take some time off before committing to grad school... I realized law school was a scam and needed something stronger. I ended up auditing a few classes I never got around to taking at undergrad. There's a LOT less pressure at a CC. I was able to find something I ultimately really liked, and refocused my efforts into pursuing that. Fast-forward 8 months, now I'm getting my masters in a much more marketable degree in something I really enjoy. CC isn't a cesspool, as much as the prestige game can make you think. It's really a good place to learn about yourself and it's ridiculously cheaper than a 4 year school. There's no reason to get down on yourself for being there. It may not be where your friend saw himself 3-4 years after graduating high school, but taking the time to find out what you really enjoy is worth a lot more than rushing through a degree and ending up in a job you hate.

Fuck him. What's the point of hand-holding these weaklings through life? They'll never learn. If he can't get motivated on his own and he just makes excuses for his failures then he's of no use to the world.

Under my tutelage, you will grow from boys to men. From men into gladiators. And from gladiators into SWANSONS.

I disagree. That is exactly the kind of person that thrives in the real world. In fact, if you look at every cast member MTV has ever put on the show, I bet you'd find a good 75% of them were total flakes floating through life with no ambition.

Two pieces of advice...

First, considering that you are already enrolled in community college. I think you should focus on getting a degree (any degree, but preferably something marketable in the labour market seeing as you're not doing it out of passion). Not having any degree will cut you out of a lot of well paying but low skill corporate jobs in the future (even 5 years after graduation).

The second bit of advice, get a job (preferably during your degree) and do some travelling after your degree or during the summer and other breaks. Even if it's throughout the USA or in South America. It will broaden your horizons and you will get a better perspective on what you want out of life.

Tell him to travel, specifically to a place with lots of poverty (eg. india). Then he'll probably have a better perspective on life.
