Filing for a disability

I’m in the University programs at a big four bank working out of the southeast. I have sciatica slipped disc, herniated disc, and spinal stenosis. It is affected my ability to go into the office three times a week. I explained this to my program manager, and he said I should file a claim with HR.

I am currently in compliance, and I’m worried I will be put on a blacklist. I don’t know if I’m being paranoid. I understand it’s illegal to fire someone for a disability, but… should I do this? I haven’t been showing up as much as I should. I don’t plan to stay at this company or my position very long. Is it a bad idea to file the claim with HR? So I don’t have to come to the office three days a week. Will I be labeled as a “problem” within the industry? Just wondering what you guys think. Please be honest.

I think if you are suffering and the condition is real you should put in a claim. You program manager may want to help you, but isn't the person authorized to adjudicate a medical issue for the company. If HR recognizes your condition, then he can accommodate you, which it sounds like he would do. Yes it isn't as good for you, or for them, as it might be if this hadn't happened, but it's not your fault. So maybe after you get the HR approval, you can tell him you'd like to be back in the office as soon as you can.

This stuff is pretty common and I wouldn't worry about repercussions if your issues are legit. Be prepared to show a doctor's note and have a discussion with them about potential solutions. They will ask why your WFH setup works fine and your office setup does not, as I'm sure people are using this type of thing to WFH more.

Be aware they have to make reasonable accommodations, not just whatever you want - saying you can WFH forever might not be a reasonable accommodation at a big 4. They will probably want to look into ergonomic solutions to help your issues, flexible scheduling, etc - before just saying you can WFH.
