Finally Moving from SF to NYC

After nearly 2 years in San Francisco, my team is finally allowing me to transfer to the NYC office in January. Being in SF has had its ups and downs; visiting Napa and Lake Tahoe was nice, but the city in general wasn't my favorite.

Does anyone have any tips for moving from coast to coast? I will likely get rid of all my furniture in SF and get new stuff in New York and only bring a few suitcases and ship some boxes. Are leases typically less expensive in January? January 6th will be the move-in date I'm aiming for. Looking to live in a studio with a ~$3k budget if that's possible. Any tips for finding good units and avoiding fees? Should I start looking soon or wait until December? Thanks all.

I'm not sure if lease prices will be lower, but inventory will be lower than the summer. What is the significance of Jan. 6? I would probably visit early December in NYC and look at places to sign either ASAP / Dec 15 / Jan 1 / Jan 6. Definitely see as many places as you can. NYC apartments are very quirky and usually have one thing missing or off/different. If they don't have one thing missing, the price will be high. If you find a good place, you might have to close immediately before someone else gets it, so be prepared to put down a few months rent in the form of a cashier's check. Good places go quick.

Congrats! And when you move in, you might want to stop by the Container Store to help with all your storage needs.

I figured Jan 6th would be a good move-in date since its the first weekend after the holidays and New Years. I'm going to be home for the holidays (I'm from Rhode Island) so that Jan 6th weekend I could Amtrak down to NYC and get my move-in started.

Question on closing apartments quickly: If I tour an apartment on December 15th for example, would it typically be for an immediate move in? Or would I be able to tour an apartment in December for a January move in, but I would pay all the deposits and whatnot right away after seeing the apartment

I responded to this earlier but it didn’t post. It largely depends. It could be an immediate move in and you have to pounce on it or they might let you sign for a Jan 1 move in - in mid December.

Yeah you likely would have to pay immediately to secure the place so no one else gets it.

It cost me about $5000 to move from SF to NYC earlier in 2023. I also booked an Airbnb for a month while I toured apartments. Not sure if this is possible anymore. Signed a place within a week and had my stuff delivered there once the truck made it across the country.

One thing - however much stuff you plan to bring make sure you get rid of 1/3 to 1/2 of that before packing. I have way too much furniture. My square footage is the same but my SF place was a large open square and the new apartment is a ‘rail car’ style divided into three rooms in a line. Much less wall space available.
