For those of you not in NYC, what cars do you drive?
I'm a "car guy" and have a 2023 Miata with a manual as a weekend car (I go to Tail of the Dragon sometimes with a group on weekends, and live in an area with great backroads). My daily is an older CX-5 with 135k miles on it now, had it for 8 years, and we have an old 1500 truck for hunting and kayaking but otherwise don't drive it.
I'm thinking of replacing the CX-5 soon. Since it's been such a great car, I was thinking of getting the CX-50 with the same engine, but I also kind of want to "splurge" a little and get something like an IS-350 F Sport or even an M240i. Our 1 kid is getting to the point where they won't need a car seat/booster seat so we won't really need the SUV anymore. I commute 30min each way 5 days a week.
Just curious, for those of you who "like" cars, what do ya'll drive?
I've always been a car guy since I was young and favorite current car is the Lotus Emira. I have enough cash to buy it, but just drive a 2021 Toyota Camry with 21K miles. I currently live downtown in a city and actually never really drive that much anymore. I like BMW M2s, M3s, and M4s as well. I've never had a problem with the Toyota and love the reliability aspect of it.

Currently a first year IB analyst in a Tier 3 city and daily drive a 2020 Mustang Eco (63k miles now). Been doing some track days and autocross on the weekends if I have time. My next car I would like to own is probably a Mustang Mach 1 or a C6 Z06! Cars I think are good for you to consider that are also practical: Audi S4/S5, M340i, ATS-V, Civic Type R / Integra Type S.
You like the M340i over an M3?
Ofc not, I’m just trying to recommend cars that fit OP’s budget
My Dad still has his ‘69 Mach 1 after 35+ years! Drives a 911 for his daily but the ‘stang still sounds and feels just incredible.
Single and out of IB and drive a manual 997 911. Only car I have. Kinda want to get a truck in near term to have the practicality for home projects but not necessary (can rent trucks from Home Depot for pretty cheap if needed and used truck prices are a lot!).
Is your idea to sell the both your Mazda’s? If just want a more comfortable commuter car, can look at Lexus ES350, I used to have one and loved it, very nice, reliable, and comfortable. Have thought about getting one as a daily but then think why would I drive that over my Porsche.
Outside of really intense sports cars, I don’t really get having a daily and a weekend car. Usually cheaper and more fun to drive a car you like more often.
Nice choice. If I ever spent 911 money I would look for a low mileage 997.2 4S or 4S targa.
No I would keep the Miata and just replace the CX5. The Miata for one is a manual and I do not enjoy driving manuals in rush hour stop/go traffic. It's also a 2-seater and we have a household of 3.
The reason those "sporty" sedans are appealing to me is comfort in traffic and relatively fast in a straight line on the freeway. As fun as the Miata is on a backroad it's certainly not "fast." My mom (yes mom) had a base C6 Vette in manual a while back and that V8 was incredible. Crap interior but lovely engine and noise. I often miss that much horsepower.
Yeah traffic is aids with manual, thankful I wfh and don’t have to deal with that.
Lexus IS blacked out, black tint, black license plate cali, gold lettering
Name checks out
lol on the framing of the question. Most analysts survive just fine without a car in BOS/SF/CHI
4Runner and CRV, one is paid off the other new, but financed when they couldn't sell 4runners after the pandemic and everyone was waiting for the new gen to come out. I had 330i, E420, M3 prior to living in a city, then moved and had an RDX, and honestly the cost of upkeeping them vs the enjoyment, since you are stuck in traffic I went straight economy. Now we still have the M3 but it's in storage near my parents. Now we rent fun cars when we fly into a city if needed. In my 20s and early 30s it was a lot of fun.
2012 Toyota Rav4. Live in the LA area. My aim is to drive it until the wheels fall off and then, I'll buy a camper van.
Why not just DD the Miata? I did it with my 97M, and my '16 GT has been my only car since 18.
BMW M2. It's my daily driver though I don't drive to work and only use it on weekends.
City I'm in have terrible roads, so the stiff suspension makes driving somewhat uncomfortable until you are out of the city where the roads improve. Also it snows 2-3 months of the year, which means I rarely drive it in the winter.
4runner but use it for utility (live in southwest, carry a lot of bikes).
I previously owned a few more 'fun' cars and had zero regrets: manual s4 (loved it), manual 228i (too much turbo lag / did not love it), bmw z3m coupe (favorite car ever and will be until i die), outback (hated it), NC miata (liked), s2000 (loved), etc.
I've not kept up with the sporty car segment but would imagine a ~50k mile used Lexus IS, porsche Macan, audi s3, bmw m240, etc., would be on my short list. That said, if I had a kid, I would not be looking at a 2-door car if I already owned a miata.
Weekend toy is currently a 991.2 GT3RS Weissach. Daily is a Toyota RAV4. Want to get something cool to daily like a Raptor R but the extra expense is just unnecessary right now.
Those 991 cars with the Weissach package are appreciating right now. I swear every time I look on BAT one is selling for $20k over MSRP with 10k miles.
That's an awesome combo. Out of curiosity, what level in finance could I reasonably afford a car like a GT3RS? VP/Director in IB or higher? Just trying to stay motivated!
It really depends on where you live. I bought my first GT3 before I made associate. Cost of living is cheap in TX and cars like a GT3RS do not really depreciate. My car payment + rent (highrise) is still less than what my friends pay total for rent in NYC. The key is buying cars that hold value well so you are not losing tens of thousands in depreciation a year. The GT3RS costs less to own from that standpoint than say an AMG or BMW M car.
I drive my M8 coupe in nyc
2024 Supra MT - picked it up new and plan to keep it forever. It may be one of the last manual RWD cars.
I considered one of those, they look awesome and performance is great. How are you liking it?
It's a blast to drive! I've been doing some mods and have taken it to the track too. As someone who never owned a stick before, it's a pretty forgiving manual transmission too given the rev match assist and plentiful power (prevents stalling)
I looked at both the Supra and the new Z. What made you choose one over the other? Also how is the wind noise in the Supra with the windows down? I've heard it's really loud (not as loud as a Miata with the top down though I'm sure.)
I've never driven the new Z, but sat inside a few before. Also watched many reviews on both the Supra and Z before deciding to go with the Supra.
From what I know, the Supra claims to make 382hp, while Z is advertised at 400. However, in most drag race videos I've seen, the Supra beats the Z when testing auto vs auto / manual vs manual. Believe this has do with BMW underrating their horsepower figures, and crank vs wheel hp difference.
Also, the Supra just feels much nicer inside - the Z's interior feels quite outdated with not much update over the 370 and 350z. Apparently, the supra handles nicer as well according to the reviews. I also prefer the look of the Supra as well, especially with some simple mods like lowering and aftermarket wings.
I think the Z today could be a good buy however, given many dealers give discounts of over $5k these days, while Supra is usually marked up (and used car market trends at similar direction).
The wind buffeting issue is there, but can be solved with some simple mirrorside extension pieces. I personally have not gotten to installing one given it hadn't bothered me too much, but am planning to get to it at some point.
Yooo CX5 gang. I had a '22 CX5 and now I have a '24. That thing can be fun which I didn't expect. I'm trying to get into either a 911 or some kind of used supercar. Will probably keep the CX5 since it's so reliable.
Nice. My CX5 is a 2016 with 131k miles on it. Not 1 single issue besides tail lights going out (easy fix). Never had a car this reliable before, which is why the sane thing to do would be get another one or the CX50.
Agree. Exceeded my expectations on reliability. I think they're all this reliable so long as you get a non turbo. The turbos are a bit more fun ofc but more prone to engine issues (relative to these cars). I am having 1 issue right now someone hit my headlight unit. The main bulb no longer works but the daytime running lights and highbeams still do and it's LED so I think I may have to replace the entire thing which looks expensive.
Mid 2000s Honda Pilot I bought off my parents a decade ago. Super reliable, fits a ton of stuff in it w/o being too big, AWD, I'm never worried about it being dinged up in the city, gets me from point A to B perfectly great. Going to drive it into the ground.
