Getting out of the fog

So like a lot of people here the first couple of years of banking really took a toll on me. I gained weight, I was sleeping poorly, and I was super lethargic. Woke up every day feeling very groggy. I countered it by drinking coffee or an energy drink everyday just go get through the day.

A few months ago I decided I had had enough of that feeling and decided to start doing yoga in the morning. I got to a 6am class before work and then head home, shower, and get into the office. I've got to say the results have been unreal! I'm feeling a million times better and have way more energy throughout the day and am actually more productive. I'm losing weight and sleeping much better at night. I have much better mental clarity and feel like I'm putting much more critical thought into my workstreams.

Basically my rule is if I can get to bed before 2 then I'm going to the class, if I'm up later than that then I'll skip the class. Most weeks I'm going 3-4 times/week. My first week or so I was super tired as my body was getting adjusted after having not worked out much for the last 2 years. But that quickly passed and I've come out the other side feeling much better. I have to say the nights where I only get 4 hours of sleep can still be taxing, but think the overall benefits of working out outweigh the sleeping benefits (at least for now).

I share all this as a useful tip for those who have been in the same boat, feeling groggy and run down by this job. I'll caveat by saying that I prob wouldn't try this routine the first six or so months on the job as you'll be busy learning and you'll want to get make a good impression off the bat. But for those settling into this career long term you've got to find a workout routine that suits you and this one has helped me immensely.

It sounds like you've made a transformative shift in your routine, and it's paying off in spades! Based on the most helpful WSO content, your experience aligns with what many professionals in high-stress careers have found: incorporating physical activity, like yoga, into your routine can significantly improve energy levels, mental clarity, and overall well-being.

Here are some key takeaways and tips inspired by your journey and similar insights from WSO threads:

1. Morning Workouts for Energy and Focus

  • Starting your day with yoga or any form of exercise can boost endorphins, improve blood flow, and set a positive tone for the day. It's no surprise you're feeling more productive and mentally sharp.
  • Even on days with limited sleep, light exercise can help combat grogginess better than relying solely on caffeine.

2. Adapting to a New Routine

  • The initial adjustment period is tough, as you mentioned, but sticking with it pays off. Many professionals report that once their body adapts, the benefits far outweigh the initial fatigue.
  • Your rule of attending class if you're in bed before 2 a.m. is a smart way to balance consistency with flexibility.

3. Sleep vs. Exercise Debate

  • While sleep is critical, moderate exercise can sometimes offset the effects of limited rest, as you've experienced. However, long-term, aim to prioritize both for sustained health and performance.

4. Tailoring the Routine to Your Career Stage

  • Your advice to avoid this routine during the first six months of banking is spot on. Early on, the focus should be on learning and making a strong impression. Once you're more established, integrating a workout routine becomes more feasible.

5. Additional Tips for Staying Energized

  • Hydration: Drink plenty of water throughout the day, not just coffee or energy drinks.
  • Nutrition: Avoid heavy breakfasts and opt for lighter, nutrient-dense options to maintain energy levels.
  • Mindfulness: Incorporate meditation or quiet reflection to manage stress and improve focus.

Your story is a great reminder that even in demanding careers, prioritizing health and well-being can lead to better performance and a more sustainable lifestyle. Keep it up, and thanks for sharing your experience—it’s sure to inspire others!

Retarded take. If you’re only sleeping four hours total, an extra hour of sleep has way higher marginal benefit than a yoga class. Why not just hit the gym in the evening a couple times a week?
