Greed

So I’ve always been really ambitious and always wanted a fuck ton of money. I worked 3 jobs throughout college and 2 throughout high school, got into a good school, got into BB IB and have a lot saved up. I kinda have an obsession over money. I view it as a score board. A few days ago I put my my old MacBook on eBay and my brother asked for it. I couldn’t get myself to give it to him. It’s $1000, I couldn’t just see that disappear. I want to but I can’t just let it go for free. I don’t know how to get over this. I don’t want to be this greedy but 8 years of only viewing everything as $ kinda stuck. I used to play video games in Middle/high school and sell the virtual coins for $, i got into sneakers, for money, etc. I start my job later this month and will be saving a ton due to Covid and all my prior ventures/jobs. Just want thoughts.

Like wags said “I’ve got a nasty addiction called money, so I do what I do”

I love wags - especially when he got all CEOed up and trimmed his nails and took off his bracelets- haha - such sacrifice.

don't have any solution here other than to think about the concrete reasons you want more money. Maybe in the past your goal was financial freedom or paying off student loans. Seems like you got it done and it's time to come up with a new goal. Maybe your new goal requires money (retire early to pursue hobbies, improve x problem in the world, support your family) - at the very least, those kinds of goals make your obsession with more money feel more meaningful and not just for the sake of increasing your net worth.

In terms of learning to be okay with giving, maybe try a gradual approach, like small charity (e.g. change to a homeless guy) and keep going from there. You might be surprised about how giving and generosity feels, i don't know

Was in your shoes. Made a crap ton of money and am on the other side realizing it's limits. It's a never-ending cycle. You'll always want more. Stop linking it to hapiness

Kind of cliche and not really the best time for it but I think traveling definitely helps. I have met a lot of different people and a lot of people that definitely have less than me but probably are a lot more generous than me. Also just experiencing the world makes you realize that there is so much more in the world to make you happy. I think that it’s good that you are prioritizing money instead of just spending frivolously and not building up a savings but I see where you’re trying to improve. It’ll probably take some time to change your mindset but the fact that you are self aware and want to improve probably means you’re on the right track.

This post looks like something Tucker Carlson would cite when he rants about bankers destroying America with greed or whatever

I’m greedy as hell too. Same tight ass mentality all through my life. But when in these situations I remind myself, I’m a tight ass in all other situations so I can be free in these ones. You should be a greedy day to day. Take take take take take. Take that bonus, raise, extra hours etc.... but at the end of the day, know that doing all this, gives you the luxury to give away that Mac book and feel like a good man/woman at the end of the day.

your brother wants some shit worth a stack for free and expects you to give it up? ok... ok... we could say no.. or... how do we give it to him, but get him on the hook for way more than a stack of value to be extracted over time? how do we make him commit to some shit on an ongoing basis? make him work for you essentially. if he can't add that value, tell him to pound sand. preferably at a beach so maybe they pay him for it fucking bum ass brother
