I'm thinking ball park figure ~$100m net worth ... but I could be wrong. Looking to open a dialogue on this with the folk on WSO

This may shock you, but there is a huge variety of boats that any of us would consider a megayacht.  I've heard the rule of thumb is that whatever the sticker price, the annual running costs are 10% without factoring in fuel.  So... if you want one of the yachts you see in the background of the Monaco Grand Prix, you're probably talking several times your number, maybe even an order of magnitude.  Because googling a $10mm yacht does not show me what I would consider to be a megayacht (which I think has a technical definition).

A “mega yacht” is minimum $100M imo. As mentioned above, huge variability when it comes to the toys of the super rich. There are billion dollar yachts nowadays that have laser defense systems.

You have to be worth several hundred million to justify owning a mega yacht imo. They’re usually rented out anyways, but you have to have the money to eat the cost when it’s not in use.

10% rule

If your net worth is $1000 million, you can afford a $100 million yacht.

"If you always put limits on everything you do, physical or anything else, it will spread into your work and into your life. There are no limits. There are only plateaus, and you must not stay there, you must go beyond them." - Bruce Lee
