Get a clear sense of your principles and never deviate from them, even if it means risking losing everything.

Don't entertain disrespect, and don't automatically smile in uncomfortable situations. Learn to be a bit more stoic. Don't be afraid to be seen as mean or grumpy. They don't care about you so you shouldn't care about their misinterpretations. Only loyalty to yourself and family.

Don't see these people as your superiors, they are literally the exact same as you, they were just born a few years earlier. Don't care if they are your friend, just be charming in a friendly way but focus on your work and increasing your knowledge.

We can't walk you through it step by step but this is just more about making a conscious effort.

Once upon a time, I was deemed non-confrontational and a pushover - “too nice” - and got taken advantaged of.  It became worth it to take it legal and took them to the cleaners.

Don’t change.  Be nice.  Keep smiling.  But also be stoic, cunning, methodical, cold blooded, mysterious, unpredictable, stubborn, risk taking, etc.

The world lies between the Law of the Jungle and the Rule of Law.  People fight for power all around us.  As a nice person, learn how others who have power, mastery or who are very different than you play the game and borrow a “mask” of them as certain situations arise.  You learn to spot people with the most harmful personality disorders.  You care about prestige or status less and less as that is a weapon used by people to trick others.

Having a resting smiley face is way better than a resting b**tch face.  Be confident.
