I regret leaving surgical residency (maybe)?
Guys I left surgical residency around 1.5 years ago to pursue a career in SS ER. I’m currently making $225k all in, but man I miss the action.
I had a close family member of mine admitted into the hospital and I came to visit them late at night and I miss the long hours in the hospital. I miss having a sense of doing something productive in society. I miss the action of the OR. I’ll never admit this to anyone in real life (too much ego). They all told me that I’m an idiot for leaving surgery to work at a bank (some of them still think I’m a bank teller).
I know a lot of this was nostalgia driven from being away from healthcare for so long and walking into the doors of a busy academic institution. Part of the reason I left was for more financial upside which I know I’ll achieve in this field, but part of me is still longing to walk into those hospital doors and more or less being the biggest swinging dick in that building (aside from my attending).
Now I’m just sitting on excel all day and typing up notes…
What made you switch from surgical residency to finance? I completely understand the potential regrets. Excel is mind numbing. Just curious what fueled that decision?
It’s was numerous things.
1) the financial upside.
2) don’t know how I could afford the lifestyle I wanted in a city like NYC being a surgeon making 300k. I had no desire to move to rural Mississippi to make 700k. Additionally, I wanted to be working in academics and be in a mentoring/teaching role while seeing the most complex cases —> less pay than private practice.
A lot of this might be stemming from the nostalgia hit of walking into a my alma mater again. Seeing familiar routes and faces. Similar to returning to your undergraduate institution a year or so after graduation.
There was a poster here a few weeks ago who want to leave his surgical residency. He got some support for quitting on the board. I hope he reads this.
