IB Analysts-Associates how is your dating life treating you.

Not the most general topic to discuss, as people come from different backgrounds, but I was really curious about how the dating life gets as you proceed towards your analyst year.

Honestly, this kind of narrow-minded thinking is exactly what limits people in this industry. I used to think the same way when I was surrounded finance club circle jerks freshman fall. However, life expands as much as you allow it to.

Since stepping outside that circle, I’ve met people (not just for hooking up/dating) who genuinely challenged me—in ways no technical guide or insights day ever could. The people I met have gotten me to: go skydiving, paragliding, attend NYFW, explore NYC’s art scene, Bungee jump off the Verzasca Dam in Switzerland, Volunteer at a sea turtle rescue center in Costa Rica, dance until sunrise with strangers etc, and had conversations that never once mentioned Goldman or EV/EBITDA—yet were far more enlightening.

Here’s the thing: dating people outside of finance doesn’t mean they won’t “get” your workload. It means you learn to communicate better. It forces you to articulate your stress, your goals, and your world without hiding behind acronyms. It builds empathy, patience, and balance. Those are skills that make you better in life and in banking.

If your only connection point with someone is whether they know how to interpret a Signet Ring Social meme (wtf even is this), maybe it’s not dating you’re struggling with—it’s perspective. Plenty of people in this industry make time for meaningful relationships beyond their firm or graduating class. You just need to believe there’s more to life than career progression—and seek people who remind you of that (right now you sound like a tool).
